BUYSOUNDTRAX Records presents A WHALE FOR THE KILLING, featuring music composed by Basil Poledouris for the 1981 television movie directed by Richard T. Heffron, based on the book written by Farley Mowat, starring and co-produced by Peter Strauss, along with Dee Wallace, Kathryn Walker, Bruce McGill and Richard Widmark. Also included is the composer’s score for WIND, the 1992 drama directed by Carroll Ballard, written by Rudy Wurlitzer and Mac Gudgeon, starring Matthew Modine, Jennifer Grey, Cliff Robertson, Jack Thompson and Stellan Skarsgård.
A WHALE FOR THE KILLING tells the story of Charles Landon (Peter Strauss), an ecologist from New York who finds himself stranded in a small village in Newfoundland with his family after a storm has blown them off course. When a humpback whale is discovered stranded by the same storm in the town’s lagoon, Charles sets out to save the whale’s life from some of the local townspeople, who have their own plans for the whale.
WIND tells the story of young sailor Will Parker (Matthew Modine) as he rises in the ranks to join the American sailing team to compete in the America’s Cup sailing competition. The film is inspired by the real life events surrounding the first time the American team lost the America’s Cup to another country. Will is invited to join legendary American skipper Morgan Weld's (Cliff Robertson) racing team to train and compete in the America's Cup. When the team loses the race to the Australians, Will is held responsible and kicked off the team. Months later, an opportunity presents itself for Will to build his own boat, compete in the race and possibly reclaim the America’s Cup from the Australians.
Basil Poledouris was born on August 21, 1945 in Kansas City. He started taking piano lessons when he was 7 years old. Eventually, he went on to become a student at USC, where he studied directing, cinematography, editing, sound and music. In over two decades of scoring motion pictures, he has proven himself a master of melody and emotional power, forging rewarding creative relationships with directors such as Paul Verhoeven, John Milius, Randal Kleiser, Simon Wincer and John Waters. Basil has composed music for films such as BIG WEDNESDAY, THE BLUE LAGOON, CONAN THE BARBARIAN, RED DAWN, ROBOCOP, FLESH AND BLOOD, QUIGLEY DOWN UNDER, THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER, LES MISERABLES, STARSHIP TROOPERS and FOR LOVE OF THE GAME. For television, he composed music for the epic miniseries AMERIKA and LONESOME DOVE, for which he won an Emmy in 1989.
BUYSOUNDTRAX Records presents A WHALE FOR THE KILLING for the first time on compact disc from the composer’s own elements. At the time of the project, the composer had prepared a release for demonstration purposes and a possible album release. These elements have been remastered by James Nelson of Digital Outland. Previously released twice on compact disc and considered a rarity, WIND has been newly mastered and the original album sequencing has been restored, minus the song contained on the original soundtrack release. Both films appealed to the composer’s love of the sea and sailing and this is reflected in the music he composed for these projects.

BUYSOUNDTRAX Records presents the original soundtrack to WINTERHAWK, featuring music composed and conducted by Lee Holdridge for the 1975 Western written and directed by Charles B. Pierce (THE LEGEND OF BOGGY CREEK, THE TOWN THAT DREADED SUNDOWN), starring Michael Dante, Leif Erickson, Denver Pyle, L.Q. Jones, Woody Strode, Elisha Cook, Jr., Sacheen Littlefeather and Dawn Wells.
WINTERHAWK takes place in 1840 and tells the story of a Blackfoot Indian chief who finds himself and his tribe in danger of extinction from a deadly outbreak of smallpox in what would eventually become Montana. His friend, a white trapper named Elkhorn tells him his only option is to make contact with the nearest white settlement and try to trade for the medicine needed to save his people. At this time, though, the only white people in the area are either mountain men or missionaries. His biggest obstacle is the language barrier and he is soon tricked by some of the local mountain men who promise to take him to a doctor but instead ambush Winterhawk in the forest, killing some of his men and stealing his trade goods. In reprisal, Winterhawk takes a young woman and her brother prisoner and begins the journey back to his village. The leaders of the white settlement, including the father of Winterhawk’s prisoner, form a posse and turn to Elkhorn to help them find Winterhawk and settle their differences. As the posse gets closer to his village, Winterhawk must decide whether he will kill the white men for their treachery or set aside his anger and try to trade with them for the medicine his people need to survive.
Lee Holdridge was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti in 1944. He spent his early years in Costa Rica, beginning music studies on the violin at the age of ten with Hugo Mariani, then the conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra of Costa Rica. Later, Holdridge moved to New York to continue his music studies and begin his professional career as a composer. Holdridge’s successes in New York came to the attention of Neil Diamond who brought Holdridge to Los Angeles to write arrangements for his forthcoming albums. A string of Gold and Platinum hits followed, which led to Diamond and Holdridge collaborating on the film score for Jonathan Livingston Seagull. Since that time, Holdridge has scored numerous film such as Splash, Big Business, Mr. Mom, Micki & Maude, 16 Days Of Glory, The Beastmaster, Sylvester, A Tigers’ Tale, El Pueblo Del Sol, Old Gringo and Pastime. His television work includes Moonlighting, Beauty and the Beast, the complete eight hour remake of East of Eden, The Tenth Man, Dreamer of Oz, Hallmark Hall Of Fame’s One Against the Wind and The Story Lady. Lee also began a very successful collaboration with Moriah Films, the film division of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, with the Academy Award winning documentary feature film The Long Way Home. In addition to his film career, Mr. Holdridge has had an extensive repertoire of concert works performed and recorded. He has also worked with many major recording artists having written, arranged and conducted for Placido Domingo, Barbra Streisand, Brian May of Queen, Stevie Wonder, Neil Diamond, John Denver, Neil Sedaka, Daniel Rodriguez, Al Jarreau, Dionne Warwick, Diana Ross, Natalie Cole, Jane Oliver and many others.
BUYSOUNDTRAX Records presents the world premiere release of WINTERHAWK, containing the score composed by Lee Holdridge and additional music composed for the film by William Goldstein and Nicolas Flagello. The score for WINTERHAWK is presented in its entirety, with alternate takes and bonus tracks, along with liner notes written by Randall Larson. For reasons that are not clear, the Good Times Home Video release of WINTERHAWK carries a replacement score composed electronically by Kendall Schmidt. His music is not included on this release.
WINTERHAWK is a limited edition release of 1000 units. The first 100 copies will be autographed by composer Lee Holdridge.

Da kann man wirklich nichts hinzufügen.

Doof nur das "A Whale for the Killing" zusammen mit "Wind" drauf ist. Von "Wind" habe ich nämlich schon die Citadel-Ausgabe und wie es scheint decken sich die Tracks 1:1. Aber auf "A Whale for the Killing" bin ich natürlich sehr scharf drauf. Da muss ich wohl in den sauren Apfel beissen. : )

Der Holdridge ist sowieso so gut wie gekauft.

Tolle Neuigkeiten! Aber... ich möchte NICHT bei BSX bestellen, brrrrr, allein wenn ich dran denke, läuft´s mir kalt den Rücken runter. Bieten denn die anderen üblichen Anbieterverdächtigen wie SAE. moviemusic.com oder Intrada diese CD nicht an? Bisher habe ich da noch nix gesehen.

Nein, warum? Wie du ja weißt, bezahlt man Zoll erst bei einer Gebühr ab 5 Euro... wenn ich also 1 oder 2 Euro löhnen sollte, ist das für mich immer noch SEHR akzeptabel.

Thomas, Du kannst das ja mal mit dem Stundenlohn Deines Hauptberufes umrechnen, wenn Deine Lieferung aus einem Driitland beim Zoll "abgefangen" wird und Du die nötigen Nachweise erbringen mußt. Selbst wenn die Einfuhrabgaben unter 5,- Euro bleiben und Du beim Zoll nichts zahlen mußt, hast Du als Privatperson normalerweise nur erhöhten Aufwand, denn generell muß eine Privatperson die entsprechenden Nachweise VOR ORT erbringen (alles andere liegt am jeweiligen Zollamt vor Ort). Heißt: Zum Zoll fahren / Feststellung, daß die Einfuhrabgaben unter 5,- Euro liegen etc. / nichts bezahlen / mit der Ware nach Hause fahren ...

Unter'm Strich würdest Du also mehr bezahlen, als wenn Du bei einem x-beliebigem Shop in Deutschland kaufen würdest. Ob das nun bei Chris' Soundtrack Club, beim Soundtrack-Club oder bei einem anderen Shop ist, ist vollkommen egal ...

Ich vergaß ... die Zoll-Beamten sind nicht blöde. Wenn Du bei der gleichen Firma eines Drittlandes mehrere CDs im Abstand von wenigen Tagen bestellst, um somit die Einfuhrabgaben umgehen zu wollen, so fällt das dem Zoll auf. Die Quittung dafür erfolgt dann irgendwann ...

Nein, Bernd. Das Zollamt, zu dem ich im Fall der Fälle fahre, ist nur 10 km entfernt. Wenn ich beide CDs z.B. beim Soundtrack-Club bestelle, löhne ich dort mit Sicherheit ca. 48 - 50 Euro (inkl. Versand), da es ja limitierte Auflagen sind. Da komme ich mit meinen 30 Euro (inkl. Zoll) plus Fahrtkosten immer noch sehr günstig weg.

Ich bin auch nicht auf den Kopf gefallen und habe solche Spirenzchen noch nie veranstaltet.

WIE sind denn so diese Musiken, die beiden Poledourise und der Holdridge? Ist da musikalisch "was los", melodisch, abenteuerlich oder plätschern die so vor sich hin?

Also den poledouris-doppeldecker kann ich nicht oft genug empfehlen. Wind ist zwar größtenteils synthetisch, enthält aber einige der gelungensten synth-orchester parts überhaupt und ist eine sehr inspirierte arbeit. Große fanfaren und viel melodie gibts da natürlich auch (vielleicht klemme ich mich morgen mal hinter eine wind-suite ) Whale for the killing ist mit etwas mehr folklore elementen genauso empfehlenswert.

Zum holdridge kann ich noch nichts sagen. Aber die clips sind sehr vielversprechend.
