“DOIN’ IT FOR SUGAR”

KRITZERLAND IS VERY PROUD TO PRESENT A SPECIAL 2 CD LIMITED EDITION:

SUGAR
Original Cast Album
Music by Jule Styne Lyrics by Bob Merrill

Sometimes timing is everything. If, for example, Sugar, a musical based on a beloved film comedy, with two great male starring roles, directed by an amazing director/choreographer, had opened not in April 1972 but in April 2001, the year another musical based on a beloved film comedy, with two great male starring roles, directed by an amazing director/choreographer, instead of April 1972, my guess is it would have been a smash hit and run for a very long time. But The Producers had the timing and Sugar didn’t.

Sugar had the misfortune to open at a time when the musical theater was going through great change – as Time magazine critic T.E. Kalem put it in his review of Sugar: “Sugar is almost a textbook case of a musical born after its time. It may well enjoy great wads of audience favor. But in the past three years Company and Follies have altered the critical perspective by providing a musical form that is spare, intelligent, ironic, mature and capable of sustaining three-dimensional characters.” By 2001, audiences, after years of spare, intelligent, ironic, mature musicals, were ready, willing, and more than able to embrace on old-fashioned nothing-on-its-mind-but-laughs-and-entertainment musical like The Producers. But in 1972, Sugar, despite its non-stop hilarity and tuneful Jule Styne/Bob Merrill songs, seemed like a bit of a dinosaur, at least to critics. The book was deemed clunky and the score uninspired. And maybe it seemed that way back then. Now, it seems a model of musical comedy craftsmanship. From the first notes of the overture you know it’s a Jule Styne score – and what an overture it is, classic Styne all the way, with great tunes, one after another, all orchestrated by the wonderful Philip J. Lang. The songs are clever and fun and occasionally laugh out loud funny – it’s a real musical comedy score, the kind they don’t write any more. The performances are stellar, with great work from stars Robert Morse, Tony Roberts, Elaine Joyce, and Cyril Ritchard.

Sugar was originally released on United Artists records. It was then issued on CD in 1999 by Ryko (the Ryko is long out of print and bringing fairly high prices). For this release we pulled all the tapes from the MGM vaults. As was the case with Promises, Promises, the first thing we found was that the Ryko version was not the original album mix, but a remix that simply attempted to ape the original album mix. The original album masters were there, along with all the sixteen-track session tapes. After listening to the album masters, we couldn’t believe how much swimmy, washy reverb was used on that original mix (and on the CD released by Ryko). It was the fashion back then, but this was just about the heaviest reverb we’d ever heard on a cast recording. It robbed the orchestra of detail and the vocals sounded like they were in a huge garage. The album masters did, however, sound better than the previous CD release.

The sound on the sixteen-track session tapes was astounding. Yes, it was dry, and yes it needed some space added, but the recording itself and the way the band and performers sounded was so crystal clear and beautiful and brassy that it took no more than five seconds to realize that we wanted to do what we did with Promises, and offer an alternate new mix along with the original album mix on CD for the first time.

Remixing this score was a particular joy. Suddenly we were hearing wonderful orchestral details we’d never heard before – we placed the instruments a little differently in the soundstage for optimum clarity, and the vocals sound much more present and are no longer occasionally getting beaten up by the band the way they were in the original. So we hope it will be fun to hear this alternate mix with a lot less artificial processing – we think it gives the score a whole new vibrancy and vitality as well as crystal clarity.

This release is limited to 1000 copies only. We’ve priced this 2 CD set at our normal 1 CD price of $19.98 plus shipping.

Our license from MGM limits the run to 2,000 copies. It should be out as soon as possible, considering we have a contractual release date of October 1, 2010. I might actually put it in the Yahoo store before then, just so I have enough money to finance the production of the album. The album will go for $18.95 and come with a 12 page booklet, maybe 16 if Hans and Barry Levinson can tell us about the score and the way it works in the movie.
Hope this clears things up.

Les Baxter's fast and furious score to one of AIP's "classic" motorcycle films comes roarin' at you for the first time on cd. For this release, the producer went back to the original 1/4 inch elements and prepared one wild album. As presented, the original album assembly is first followed by a handful of bonus tracks. Album cover features, in our opinion, one of the best one sheets EVER!
La La Land goes APE over of our latest release -- Miles Goodman's heartwarming, comical tale of a boy and a monkey. A must have for any fan of Simian Cinema! But seriously this score is FANTASTIC!
Angelo Badalamenti is the composer of some of the most beautiful and evocative film music of recent times. Most famous for his haunting and hypnotic music for such David Lynch productions as Twin Peaks, Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive, Badalamenti’s soundtracks have been best-sellers. The composer’s theme and music for Bravo TV’s Inside The Actors Studio has similarly become iconic.

A special tribute concert was performed to honor Angelo Badalamenti at the 2009 Ghent International Film Festival and, in separate recording sessions, the concert program was recorded with conductor Dirk Brossé.

Over 70 minutes of Badalamenti’s music is presented here:
Blue Velvet • Twin Peaks • Inside The Actors Studio • Mulholland Drive • A Very Long Engagement

The collection also includes a couple of very special pieces. The entrancing song Who Will Take My Dreams Away was co-written with singer Marianne Faithful, who sings on this recording. Badalamenti also composed the music for the lighting of the Olympic torch at the Barcelona 1992 Summer Olympic Games and this rarity also appears here.

Angelo Badalamenti: Music For Film and Television is an outstanding collection of the composer’s best work.

Twelve-year old Owen (Kodi Smit-McPhee, The Road) is viciously bullied by his classmates and neglected by his divorcing parents. His only friend is his new neighbor Abby (Chloe Moretz, Kick-Ass), an eerily self-possessed young girl who lives next door with her silent father (Oscar nominee Richard Jenkins, The Visitor). Recognizing a fellow outcast, Owen opens up to her and before long, the two have formed a unique bond. When a string of grisly murders puts the town on high alert, Abby's father disappears, and the terrified girl is left to fend for herself. Still, she repeatedly rebuffs Owen’s efforts to help her and her increasingly bizarre behavior leads the imaginative Owen to suspect she’s hiding an unthinkable secret.

Academy Award-winning composer Michael Giacchino (Up) provides a suitably unsettling score, laced with melancholy and intrigue.

Overture Films opens LET ME IN nationwide on October 1.
2m1 Records is very pleased to announce the upcoming score release of Nickel Children by Rich Ragsdale, which is a post-rock inspired record that mixes dark and orchestral ambience with beautiful melodic cues. Originally released in 2005, Nickel Children focuses on a poignant theme of runaways resorting to child prostitution in order to survive. Because the viewer struggles to watch the harsh realities of forced adulthood conflict with retaining innocence and humanity, Rich defines this struggle through variable guitar and piano motifs. Combining these melodies while adding a lushly dark and foreboding soundscape takes the listener on an emotional roller coaster that is the defining experience of each character in the film. Recorded, performed, and composed by Rich in a small and tiny studio gave him the ability to fine-tune and tweak every element of the performance. As a result, Nickel Children is a fantastic example of his perfectionism and his eclectic talent of composing in an entirely different genre than the standard classical style. Produced in conjunction with Andrew P. Alderete and KNR Productions, 2m1 Records is very excited to release this album next month.
Studying classical guitar at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Rich went USC where he studied under Christopher Young and collaborated with a number of composers, one of which included Deborah Lurie. There is no doubt that this diverse background fused with his eclectic love and appreciation of multiple genres influenced El Charro, as it ranges from a contemporary and modern classical aesthetic to a mixture of thematic cues similar to Bernard Herrmann, Jerry Goldsmith, and even Chris Young's score to Hellraiser. Recorded with a live orchestra and choir, El Charro is a unique mixture of ambiance and thematic textures with a simple 4-note motif that defines Charro - a man who's fall from grace was a result of losing the woman he loved. 2m1 is very excited to release this score within the next few weeks.
ONE-EYED JACKS

Music Composed and Conducted by Hugo Friedhofer

From the moment of their inception, some films are simply destined to become legendary in one way or another and Marlon Brando’s sole directorial effort had legend stamped on it from the get-go. Based on the book The Authentic Death of Hendry Jones by Charles Neider, the film’s first script was written by a young up-and-coming writer named Sam Peckinpah. It was subsequently re-written by Calder Willingham and then Guy Trosper. After viewing a movie called The Killing, Brando hired its director, Stanley Kubrick. By the time the film went before the cameras, Kubrick was gone and Brando was not only starring, but also directing. While the end result might not be to everyone’s liking, the fact is that the finished film is oddly compelling, poetic, and sometimes completely bizarre, and fully deserving of its legendary cult status.

The film looks gorgeous – it was the final film made in Paramount’s brilliant process, VistaVision, and the great Charles Lang was the director of photography. The cast also included Karl Malden, Katy Jurado, Ben Johnson, Slim Pickens, and the supremely weird Timothy Carey. There are some truly great scenes and some eminently quotable dialogue (“Get up off the floor, you scum-sucking pig”). But what gives the film a great deal of its luster and brilliance is the score by Hugo Friedhofer.

Sometimes the stars are magically aligned and a composer gets a perfect project, one that plays to all his musical strengths – Friedhofer’s music elevates One-Eyed Jacks in every sense – it’s passionate, beautiful, exciting, dramatic, luminous – and one of Friedhofer’s greatest achievements, in a career filled with them: The Best Years of Our Lives, The Bishop’s Wife, The Rains of Ranchipur, This Earth Is Mine, The Young Lions (also with Brando), The Harder They Fall, Vera Cruz, Soldier of Fortune, Seven Cities of Gold, Violent Saturday, Hondo, Rancho Notorious, Broken Arrow, and the list could go on for several more pages.

One-Eyed Jacks was originally released on LP by Liberty Records. Friedhofer had all the scoring masters available to him and from these he prepared the album release (any thoughts of a 2 LP set vanished when the film did not perform at the box office). Obviously because of LP time restrictions, less than half of Friedhofer’s amazing score was on the album. On CD 1, we present that original album program, remastered from the original two-track album masters, along with two alternate cues from the full score. On CD 2 we present Friedhofer’s entire score in all its magnificence, in pristine stereo sound. To hear this score complete is a revelation – and for Friedhofer fans and any fan of great film music, this 2 CD set is a must-have. This is the world premiere release of any of this music on CD. The booklet features new and great liner notes by Nick Redman.

This release is limited to 1200 copies only. For this release, we are offering this 2 CD set at our usual 1 CD price: $19.98 plus shipping.

CD will ship by the last week of September – however, preorders placed directly through Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks earlier (we’ve been averaging four weeks early). To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.
