  6. HOOSIERS Label: Intrada Special Collection Volume 226 Date: 1986 Tracks: 17 Time = 59:48 At last! Long-awaited world premiere complete presentation of endearingly popular Academy Award-nominated score by Jerry Goldsmith to endearingly popular sports drama starring Gene Hackman, directed by David Anspaugh, written by Angelo Pizzo. Goldsmith score originates on wonderful LP with duration of 39 minutes but never appears on CD in U.S. International releases (some under U.K. title Best Shot) all have same contents as original LP. Goldsmith emphasizes rousing basketball music but, interestingly, omits several more serious ideas from his album, including one important theme represented only in this new complete version. Titled "No More Basketball", saddened cue offers haunting tune for woodwinds, strings and actually appears twice in finished film. Another important new cue is "Someone I Knew", featuring serious solo line for cello over strings as Coach Dale (Hackman) confesses tragic mistake in his past. Rich piece is darkest moment in score and brings entirely new level to Goldsmith's impressive score. Also find for first time transparent, delicate piece ("The Gym") underscoring small town team's first sights at big-time gymnasium plus rousing orchestral fanfare ("Free Shot") for regional finals. Several other new cues add additional depth as well. Goldsmith was fond of his score, even creating a couple of beautiful longer cues out of shorter ones for his original album. We have retained those assemblies while otherwise presenting complete score in picture sequence. The best of both worlds! Highlights abound in this moving musical slice of Americana but unforgettable trumpet solo playing main theme for opening & closing of score stands front & center. Intrada proudly presents entire score from actual digital session masters combining mixing talents of two legendary engineers: Mike Ross, Bruce Botnick. Project took years to develop, finally came together through courtesy of both MGM, Universal Music. A definitive presentation of one of Goldsmith's most beloved works! Jerry Goldsmith conducts. 8. Label: Intrada Special Collection Volume 225 Date: 1949 / 1950 Tracks: 35 Time = 72:38 World premiere release of two Hugo Friedhofer scores to Paramount films directed by Mitchell Leisen. First is 1949 costume adventure about 15th-Century Borgia family, starring Paulette Goddard. Friedhofer took opportunity to write serious Renaissance-style score using several established "closed forms" including the passacaglia plus offering regal fanfares, courtly music, battle sequences, more. Score is rousing, profuse with period color. Second score is 1950 WWII espionage thriller with Alan Ladd. Here Friedhofer provides several action cues plus gorgeous love theme used judiciously in score. Famous Oscar-winning Jay Livingston/Ray Evans song "Mona Lisa" was featured in film as instrumental accordion piece warning O.S.S. officers of Nazi activities and this instrumental cue also appears on CD. Score here is dark-edged, dramatic with riffs of violence. Both scores appear in crisp mono sound from original Paramount elements. Hugo Friedhofer composes, Irwin Talbot conducts. 11.
  12. Hour_sales_sheet.pdfGerade ne Mail von James Fitzpatrick bekommen. Auf der Tadllowseite noch nicht zu finden.

  17. Quartet Records is very proud to present two macabre, deliciously grotesque new releases... SHANKS Music Composed and Conducted by Alex North Alex North was one of Hollywood’s most versatile and renowned composers, with many familiar and justly celebrated scores to his credit (Spartacus, A Streetcar Named Desire et al). However, our latest Quartet Records release, in collaboration with Paramount Pictures, sheds light on an unfamiliar corner of the composer’s work: Shanks (1974). Produced by the composer’s son, Steven North, Shanks was the last film directed by William Castle, and the only feature to star celebrated French mime artist Marcel Marceau. Virtually unknown today, the film defies categorization: part fairy tale, part silent movie, part comedy, part horror flick. Marceau plays Malcolm Shanks, a deaf-mute puppeteer whose work for an eccentric old inventor (also portrayed by Marceau) leads to some of the most bizarre scenes in any Castle film. Like the film, North’s score is a genre-bending enigma—a profusion of styles in which early 20th-century musical expressionism rubs shoulders with Dixieland, and classic horror picture tropes coexist with passages of tenderhearted lyricism. Well over an hour in length, North’s score was brilliantly orchestrated by Henry Brant for two different ensembles (one comprised mostly of winds and the other consisting primarily of strings). It includes a jaunty theme for Malcolm and a sweetly gentle melody for his friend Celia. Both humor and pathos can be found in the music, as well as passages of unnerving suspense. We are delighted to finally release a true gem—one of the least-known works of Alex North. This unusual score was awarded a well-deserved Oscar nomination for Best Original Dramatic Score in 1974. This premiere CD release of Alex North’s complete score for Shanks, mastered from ¼" monaural tapes housed in the Alex North collection in the Margaret Herrick Library at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, features a 12-page booklet with notes by Frank K. DeWald and numerous film stills. WHAT'S THE MATTER WITH HELEN? Music Composed and Conducted by David Raksin Legendary David Raksin thriller score gets premiere CD release to commemorate the centenary of the composer's birth! Curtis Harrington's What's the Matter with Helen? (1971) is a film that was clearly inspired by the success of Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?, as well as other movies from the hagsploitation subgenre. Starring Shelley Winters and Debbie Reynolds, the film tells the story of two mothers whose sons have committed a horrible murder back in their Iowa hometown. After receiving a threatening phone call, Helen and Adelle leave for LA to start a new life and make a living through their dance school for little girls. Adelle seems to have it all: she finds a suitor who accepts her past and gets a taste of upper-class life. Meanwhile Helen starts to see ghosts from the past and tries to battle the shadows through the power of religion. The different choices of the two women lead to an inevitable tragedy. David Raksin's memorable score (featuring ingenious quotations of the chillingly incorporated "Goody, Goody") was previously released on a gray market LP shortly after the film's premiere. The LP had no track titles on it, mixed up the program and had several problems - the most noticeable being a missing saxophone overlay from the main title march!. During our two years’ research we managed to put together the most complete and best sounding release possible from the surviving elements, in a true labor of love. The original tapes being largely lost and Raksin’s personal copy decidedly useless (as it was fully impaired and was used for audio experiments in sound studios), our only option was to restore several copies of the infamous bootleg LP, incorporating an incomplete music stem in mono, courtesy of MGM, with good quality. This release may be short but contains over 90 percent of the score in addition to unused cues. Because of its running time and the only possible elements used, we offer the product at a special price. The CD is accompanied by a generous full color 20-page booklet with a preface by Raksin’s archivist Marilee Bradford and further details about the film, the composer and the score by Gergely Hubai (including a track-by-track analysis). Note: Both tiles are available for pre-order now. The CDs will ship by the third week of November. For more info and hear audio samples, please visit www.quartetrecords.com

  19. Kritzerland is proud to present a world premiere limited edition soundtrack release: CAREER Music Composed and Conducted by Franz Waxman In 1959, Paramount brought Career (based on James Lee’s hit off-Broadway play) to the screen with a terrific cast including Dean Martin, Anthony Franciosa, Shirley MacLaine, Carolyn Jones, Joan Blackman, and Robert Middleton. The film was directed by Joseph Anthony, who was a successful theater director and an expert at turning plays into films – prior to Career he’d already done two for Paramount: The Rainmakerand The Matchmaker. The film was a success with audiences and critics, and received three Academy Award nominations – Best Art Direction (Hal Pereira, Walter H. Tyler, Samuel M. Comer, Arthur Krams), Best Cinematography (Joseph LaShelle), and Best Costume Design (Edith Head). But the film shines in every department, none more so than with its dynamic score by Franz Waxman. From the exciting opening chords that lead directly into the big city theme, the score is absolutely thrilling. It is the kind of dramatic scoring that Waxman did so brilliantly. He gets inside the drama and the characters – the yearning, the hunger, the nastiness, the competiveness, the romance, the first taste of success, the bitter taste of failure after failure – it’s brilliant music from start to finish. By the time of Career, Waxman’s own career was filled with masterpiece after masterpiece – the 1950s alone brought forth Sunset Blvd., My Cousin Rachel, A Place in the Sun, Prince Valiant, Demetrius and the Gladiators, Rear Window, The Silver Chalice, Mister Roberts, The Spirit of St. Louis, Sayonara, Peyton Place, and The Nun’s Story – to name just a few. During his long and distinguished career, he was nominated for twelve Oscars and took home the prize twice, for Sunset Blvd. and A Place in the Sun. He had a unique musical voice and will forever hold a high place in the pantheon of great film composers. Waxman’s score for Career is presented here complete and in stereo from the original session tapes housed in the Paramount vaults. We’ve included several bonus cues that appear in the film, including the source music song “(Love Is a) Career” by Sammy Cahn and James Van Heusen, and a little dance music cue composed by Gus Levene, as well as a couple of the cues from the mono music stem. It’s always thrilling to be able to bring an unreleased Franz Waxman score to CD, especially one as dynamic and beautiful as Career. Career is limited to 1000 copies only. The price is $19.98, plus shipping. CDs will ship the second week of December. Quelle: http://www.kritzerland.com/career.htm
