Davis, who scored the Wachowskis’ Bound (1996), reinvented the symphonic language of the action blockbuster by drawing on cutting-edge concert-hall minimalism and his own background as an avant-garde composer, while maintaining the energy, pace and density required of a studio action film. From the clashing-brass “reflections,” to the racing strings, pounding percussion and flittering, repeating musical “cells,” the Matrix score fits hand-in-glove with the film’s concept of a computer-controlled reality—and offers a unique musical thumbprint that is recognizable sometimes only from a single note or chord. It is the rare commercial triumph that is also an artistic landmark. The Matrix was released by Varèse Sarabande at the time of the film, and then in a Deluxe Edition that fit as much of the score as possible on one CD. Via Facebook hat John Debney bekannt gegeben, dass bei La-La Land Records eine Doppel-CD mit seiner Musik zu THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST erscheinen wird: Wann diese erscheint ist bisher noch nicht bekannt.

Kommt als CD und Vinyl.

Das wäre wohl ein Release für mich, da ich die Musik schon mag, übrigens auch den Film. Doch derzeit muss ich da ein wenig kürzer treten in Sachen größerer CD-Kauf, daher muss der erst einmal noch warten.

Nachdem Lukas Kendall sein FSM Label mit der 250. Produktion geschlossen hatte, schiebt er nun die 251. nach. Der Soundtrack von Bobby Villarreal zu dem von Kendall produzierten Kurzfilm Sky Fighter, der auf dem Album auch als zusätzliche Blu-Ray dabei ist. Ursprünglich war kein geringerer als Ron Jones für die Musik vorgesehen, aber Kendall und er hatten kreative Differenzen über die Musik ("a retro-synth score a la the early 1980s"). Kendall hatte vor einiger Zeit darüber berichtet und Jones hat seinem Ruf schwierig zu sein mal wieder alle Ehre gemacht. Schade drum. Wie Kendall extra betont, passt alles vom Design zu den bisherigen Veröffentlichungen auf FSM. Wohl nur auf Screen Archives werden Exemplare verkauft, da es eigentlich für die Unterstützer des Fundraisings gedacht ist. Mal abwarten, vielleicht taucht das Album auch in anderen Shops auf.

Ben Affleck stars as a programming engineer who undergoes a voluntary memory wipe to protect his client’s secrets—but upon going to collect his paycheck, he is given an envelope of seemingly random trinkets and items. He must use these clues to unearth the terrible secrets of his own project. By 2003, John Powell had already scored The Bourne Identity and had his finger on the pulse of the modern action-thriller score. Paycheck blends synth and pop-rhythms with orchestral scope and, most importantly, Powell’s impeccable sense of taste. Despite almost non-stop action and suspense, he focuses on emotion and utilizes melody to elevate the proceedings. Paycheck was released by Varèse Sarabande at the time of the film. This 2CD set Deluxe Edition greatly expands the playing time to over 95 minutes, and features new liner notes by Brian Satterwhite, incorporating new interview comments with Powell. https://quartetrecords.com/product/falstaff-chimes-at-midnight-2-cd/ Quartet hat tatsächlich mehr als 5 Jahre gebraucht, um diese Doppel-CD nun endlich herauszubrigen. Lavagnino´s FALSTAFF war schon an 2017, als wir bei Alhambra Auszüge aus dem Score (u.a ja auch ein paar zuvor auf den früheren CAM-Alben unveröffentlichte Tracks) auf unserer Welles/Lavagnino-CD veröffentlicht hattten, in Sugars CAM-Katalog eine ganze Zeit lang reserviert gewesen. Von daher hatte ich mich gewundert, daß wir überhaupt Zugang zu den OrigInalbändern bekamen. Auf CD 2 von Quartet ist nun alles, was die Bänder überhaupt hergeben, draufgepackt worden. Für mich allerdings in nicht zufriedenstellender Art und Weise, denn es ist keinerlei Trennung erfolgt zwischen den wirklich für den Film komponierten Tracks und weiteren Takes bzw. Alternativ-Versionen, sondern es wurde alles nur wie es gerade so vorliegt hintereinander gesetzt anstatt letztere Tracks wenigstens vom Hauptrogramm zu trennen und in einem Bonus-Segment unterzubringen. So wird manches musikalisch mal wieder einfach keinen Sinn ergeben und x-fache Wiederholungen auf CD 2 sind damit vorprogrammiert. Das ist schon schade und doof, denn ein bißchen mehr Mühe beim Editieren wäre hier doch nötig gewesen. Die von mir für die Alhambra-CD vorgenommene Betitelung für die auf der alten CAM-CD nicht veröffentlichten Tracks ist übrigens eindeutig übernommen worden. "The King´s Soliloquy" ist allerdings jetzt eindeutig eine Minute zu lang mit 3:52 Minuten - der Track (es handelt sich um M 37) ging auf unserer CD 2:42 Minuten und er ist auch beileibe nicht länger. Der Grund ist der, daß M 38 aus der nachfolgenden Szene, als Prinz Hal einen Brief von Falstaff erhält, für den Track auf der Quartet-CD fälschlicherweise wohl noch hinzugenommen wurde. Diese Musik gehört aber ganz und gar nicht zu der Szene mit dem Monolog des Köngis - das hätte im Tracklisting wenigstens klar benannt werden müssen, ist es aber leider überhaupt nicht. Wenn man schon so was macht, dann bitte auch richtig.

Gibt noch gar keinen Thread... Am 9. Juni erscheint auf Gordons Label seine bereits 2019 aufgenommene Musik zum Outback-Abenteuerfilm BUCKLEY'S CHANCE. Regisseur Tim Brown wollte für den Film einen Score im Geist der 80er Jahre: Habe die Musik bereits hören können, und das 55-minütige Album ist wirklich äußerst hörenswert. Es gibt ein ausladendes, schwelgerisches Abenteuerthema in 3/4 mit absoluten Ohrwurmqualitäten, Herb-Dramatisches mit exotischem Touch, sehr farbiger Einsatz von Percussion (Guiro, Rassel, Marimba, diverse Trommeln), und einige harsche Actionmomente mit treibenden Ostinati der tiefen Streicher und gleißenden Akzenten von Holz- und Blechbläsern. Wie immer bei Gordon extrem feinsinnig gearbeitet und brillant instrumentiert. Bisschen schade ist, dass sich einiges wiederholt - würde man die Wiederholungen rausnehmen, wären es sicher 15 Minuten weniger Musik. Ansonsten ein toller Score, bisher der beste des Jahrgangs.
