  2. Kritzerland is proud to present another Golden Age Bernard Herrmann classic score: JANE EYRE Composed and Conducted by Bernard Herrmann The 1943 film of Jane Eyre was a first-class affair straight down the line, from it’s wonderful direction by Robert Stevenson to its literate screenplay by Stevenson, Aldous Huxley, John Houseman and others, to its formidable cast, including Joan Fontaine and Orson Welles, along with the amazing character actors Henry Daniell, Agnes Moorehead, and Sara Allgood, and Margaret O’Brien and Peggy Ann Garner as young Jane (a subtle and beautiful performance), and an unbilled, young Elizabeth Taylor as Helen Burns. The gorgeous photography was by veteran George Barnes. The resulting film was a truly remarkable movie – evocative, gothic, romantic, and managing to capture the dark, brooding essence of Charlotte Bronte’s masterpiece. The studio attempted to persuade classical composer Igor Stravinsky to make his film debut with Jane Eyre, but that didn’t happen. Bernard Herrmann really wanted to score the film but didn’t think he had a chance, but happily, Alfred Newman, head of the Fox music department, was a fan of Herrmann and he gave him the assignment, thus beginning Herrmann’s long and brilliant association with Fox. Herrmann could not have made a more auspicious debut at Fox than with Jane Eyre, a perfect marriage of film and composer. The score captures the Bronte world right from the main title, which, unlike today’s abbreviated main titles, immediately draws you in and sets the tone of the film. His incredible string and reed writing is especially evident in this score, and his themes are simply stunning. The Herrmann musical signature is in evidence in every bar of the score – his music never sounds like any other composer and is instantly identifiable. Jane Eyre remains one of the cornerstones of his film-scoring career, as fresh, mysterious, beautiful, and vibrant today as it was back in 1943. Jane Eyre was previously released in the Varese Sarabande Bernard Herrmann at Fox box set, that sold out almost instantly. It’s been great to be able to make so much of the contents of that box available in separate releases for those who missed out. Jane Eyre is limited to 1000 copies only and is priced at $19.98, plus shipping. CDs will ship by the last week of May, but we’ve actually been averaging three to five weeks early in terms of shipping ahead of the official ship date. 3. Kritzerland is proud to present the world premiere CD release of: THE SAILOR WHO FELL FROM GRACE WITH THE SEA [Der Weg allen Fleisches] Music Composed and Conducted by Johnny Mandel Yukio Mishima’s novel, The Sailor Who Fell from Grace With the Sea, was published in 1963 and translated into English in 1965. A decade later, screenwriter Lewis John Carlino (Seconds, The Brotherhood, The Mechanic, among others) adapted the novel for the screen and also made his directing debut. Moving the setting to Dartmouth, Devon, Carlino got the wonderful cameraman Douglas Slocombe to photograph, and cast Sarah Miles and Kris Kristofferson in the leads. The film features wonderful performances, gorgeous photography, and is haunting and disturbing. Adding immeasurably to the atmosphere (and there is a lot of atmosphere) is the film’s musical score by Johnny Mandel (here billed as John). Mandel’s score is simply wonderful, and his setting of Kristofferson’s tune “Sea Dream” is ravishingly beautiful. From the simple opening cues, to the lush cues underscoring the romantic scenes, Mandel conveys all the moods of the characters and the story perfectly. It’s a short score, but it does exactly what it needs to do in the time it needs to do it. Mandel was and is a world-class arranger and orchestrator, working with such legends as Tony Bennett, Quincy Jones, and Natalie Cole. His music has been interpreted by many great jazz musicians and several Mandel-penned movie themes became well-known songs – “Emily,” “The Shadow of Your Smile,” “A Time for Love” (Oscar-nominated), and “Close Enough for Love.” The Sailor Who Fell from Grace With the Sea is limited to 1000 copies only and is priced at $19.98, plus shipping. CDs will ship by the second week of May, but we’ve actually been averaging three to five weeks early in terms of shipping ahead of the official ship date. 4. Kritzerland is proud to present a new limited edition soundtrack release: THE SNOWS OF KILIMANJARO Music Composed and Conducted by Bernard Herrmann In 1952, Twentieth Century Fox memorably brought Hemingway’s The Snows of Kilimanjaroto the screen in a lavish production directed by Henry King, with a screenplay by Casey Robinson, starring a stellar cast including Gregory Peck, Ava Gardner, and Susan Hayward, along with Hildegard Knef, Leo G. Carroll, and Torin Thatcher. The beautiful cinematography was by Oscar-winner Leon Shamroy. With stunning location photography in Nairobi, Kenya, Cairo, Egypt and the French Riviera, the film was a Technicolor dazzler. The film was one of Fox’s biggest hits, earning huge grosses. It was nominated for two Academy Awards – one for Best Cinematography, Color and one for Best Art Direction, Color. There could not have been a better choice for composer than Bernard Herrmann, who gave the film his completely unique sound and sense of drama. Herrmann had already written many scores for Fox films, including Jane Eyre, Hangover Square, Anna and the King of Siam, The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, The Day the Earth Stood Still, and 5 Fingers, and subsequent to The Snows of Kilimanjaro he would continue to compose brilliant scores for the studio, including White Witch Doctor, Beneath the 12-Mile Reef, King of the Khyber Rifles, Garden of Evil, The Egyptian (with Alfred Newman), Prince of Players, The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit, A Hatful of Rain, Blue Denim, Journey to the Center of the Earth, and Tender Is the Night. In his score for The Snows of Kilimanjaro, Herrmann captures all moods of the story, from nostalgia to sadness to joy to romance. The music is achingly beautiful, most especially in the sublime “The Memory Waltz.” As always with Herrmann, his orchestral colors are uniquely his own (as are his orchestrations), and even though with most Herrmann scores you can easily say it’s one of his best, The Snows of Kilimanjaro is right up there with his greatest. The Snows of Kilimanjaro was previously released as part of the Bernard Herrmann at Fox box on Varese Sarabande. This is the scores’ first standalone release. 7. AT LONG LAST - ANYA! THE MUSICAL MUSICAL Kritzerland is proud to offer the first ever CD release of the Original Cast Recording of Anya, with a score by Robert Wright and George Forrest (based on themes by Sergei Rachmaninoff). Anya, the musical version of Anastasia, opened on Broadway at the end of 1965 at the Ziegfeld Theater and lasted a mere fifteen performances. Nobody would have predicted that a new musical by the team that wrote Kismet (here doing to Rachmaninoff what in Kismet they did to Borodin), written by George Abbott and Guy Bolton, and direction by George Abbott would end up being such a troubled production and such a huge flop. Happily, United Artists Records went ahead and recorded the cast album and just as happily we’re thrilled to finally bring it to CD. Whatever the show’s problems (it’s been revised several times since), the album is filled with glorious music, excellent performances, and is indeed a most musical musical. The Rachmaninoff “themes” are masterfully used by Wright and Forrest (no one was better at that sort of thing than they were), and Don Walker’s orchestrations and Harold Hastings’ musical direction make the most out of all of those gorgeous melodies. The wonderful cast includes: Constance Towers, Michael Kermoyan, Lillian Gish, and Irra Petina, as well as the still alive and kicking George S. Irving. New liner notes are by Walter Willison (Tony-nominee for Two By Two), who was very close to Wright and Forrest. The CD is a Limited Edition of 1000 copies only. 8. Kritzerland is proud to present the first ever CD release of the Original Cast Recording of Illya Darling, with a score by Manos Hadjidakis and Joe Darion. Illya Darling opened on Broadway at the Mark Hellinger Theater on April 11, 1967. It was based on the wildly popular Greek film Never On Sunday, which made an International star of Melina Mercouri. The film was written and directed by American Jules Dassin, who also played the male lead. Illya Darling would have many of the same players, including Miss Mercouri, writer/director Dassin, the film’s costume designer, Theoni V. Aldredge, and film cast members Titos Vandis and Despo. The film’s composer, the Oscar-winning Manos Hadjidakis (Oscar for Best Song – Never On Sunday), would write the score, with lyrics by Man Of La Mancha’s Joe Darion. The show had a difficult birth during its out-of-town tryouts, and it opened on Broadway to tepid reviews – but those tepid reviews also were love letters to Miss Mercouri. The show received six Tony nominations, winning none. Because of Miss Mercouri’s reviews and star power, the show ran almost a year, and then toured with Cyd Charisse. The original cast album was issued by United Artists, who had funded the show in full. That LP put the songs in a completely different order than they were in the show. For this first-ever CD release, we have put the songs back in show order and have given the proper titles to any that were renamed for the LP. In going through the session tapes, we made the incredible discovery that two songs were recorded but not used on the LP – the show’s opening number “Po, Po, Po” and a number called “Birthday Song.” Both songs were transferred and mixed from the four-track session tapes and put where they belong in the show’s song order. Hearing the show with those two numbers and everything in show order is something of a revelation. The colorful cast includes an incandescent Melina Mercouri, Orson Bean, Titos Vandis, Nikos Kourkoulos, Rudy Bond, Hal Linden, and Joe E. Marks. The CD has been mastered from the original album master tapes (and for the two added songs, from the original four-track session tapes). The CD is a Limited Edition of 1000 copies only.
