When the law has a job they can't handle... they need a man outside the law.

BUYSOUNDTRAX Records will be releasing LASSITER, featuring music composed and conducted by Ken Thorne for the 1984 action film written by David Taylor, directed by Roger Young and starring Tom Selleck, Lauren Hutton, Jane Seymour, Bob Hoskins, Ed Lauter and Joe Regalbuto.

Tom Selleck plays Nick Lassiter, a handsome jewel thief operating in London in the late 1930s, as the second World War approaches. Arrested while breaking into a mansion, Lassiter is blackmailed by Scotland Yard. The offer: Break into the German embassy and steal 10 million dollars in Nazi diamonds before they can be used to finance Hitlers military buildup. Refuse and hes off to prison.

To provide music for LASSITER, the producers hired veteran composer Ken Thorne. As the film is a period piece, Thorne wrote a score drawn from elements of 1930s jazz music and also adapted popular tunes of the period to be used in the fabric of the score. A small orchestra made up of trumpet, clarinet, alto sax, trombone, tuba, banjo, drums, and piano would be used to perform the period elements of the score. Strings, French horns and extra percussion would augment the orchestra for some of the action scenes.

Ken Thorne was born in England in 1924. During the 1940s, he had a successful career as a big band pianist and later decided to take music studies seriously, studying composition at Cambridge. His film work began in earnest in the early 1960s, scoring comedies and crime dramas. In 1965, Thorne reunited with director Richard Lester on an early film starring the Beatles, HELP! For this assignment, Thorne was asked to adapt the popular songs of the band and incorporate them into the underscore of the film. HELP! was a great success for everyone involved, including Thorne and he became Richard Lesters composer of choice for many years, collaborating on films such as HOW I WON THE WAR, A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM, JUGGERNAUT, ROYAL FLASH and SUPERMAN II & III. For his work on A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM, he received an Academy Award.

In addition to collaborating with Richard Lester on his films, Ken Thorne has also scored feature films such as INSPECTOR CLOUSEAU, HANNIE CAULDER, THE MAGIC CHRISTIAN, ASSAULT ON AGATHON, THE PROTECTOR, THE EVIL THAT MEN DO and THE HOUSE WHERE EVIL DWELLS. For television, Thorne has written music for series such as THE PERSUADERS and television films such as THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME, THE RETURN OF SHERLOCK HOLMES, GREAT EXPECTATIONS, RETURN TO LONESOME DOVE and LOVE COMES SOFTLY.

Originally issued on LP at the time of the films release, BUYSOUNDTRAX Records presents the first appearance of LASSITER on compact disc. This release contains all of the music from the original album and features music that is previously unreleased. This is a limited edition release of 1000 units. The first 100 copies will be autographed by composer Ken Thorne.

BUYSOUNDTRAX Records will be releasing CAPTAIN ABU RAED, featuring music composed and conducted by Austin Wintory for the 2009 drama written and directed by Amin Matalqa and starring Nadim Sawalha.

CAPTAIN ABU RAED tells the story of Abu Raed, an old airport janitor who has always longed to see the world but has never been able to afford the ticket to travel. One day, he meets a group of children in his poor neighborhood who mistake him for an airplane pilot and beg him to share stories of the world outside of Jordan. Through his imaginary stories, Abu Raed makes new friends and learns about the grim realities of their home lives. He is ultimately able to inspire the children and change their lives.

For CAPTAIN ABU RAED, the director was looking for a Western sound, instead of the typical Middle Eastern orchestral color an audience would be used to hearing in a film set in this part of the world. The film would need a universally romantic score that would affect an audience in any part of the world. To satisfy this requirement, the director turned to composer Austin Wintory. After meeting to discuss the score for another project, both men recognized a similar love and respect for film music and that a collaboration between them could be successful with this common language to communicate.

Austin Wintory began studying piano in Denver, Colorado at age 10 and began composing almost immediately. By the time he graduated from high school, Austin had conducted his own works in nearly a dozen different orchestra concerts, written music for a start-up computer game, performed a commissioned piece for a Youth Summit convention's opening ceremony and composed and conducted an hour-long orchestral score for a former teachers wedding ceremony and reception. He was also a commissioned composer for a Colorado Symphony chamber ensemble, the Up Close and Musical.

His first film score, composed for the silent short, NUTS&BOLTS, directed by Newell Todd, won the Golden Silent Series score competition and received a double performance live at NYC's Lincoln Center, synched to the film. Austin received separate awards for two brass quintet works, a woodwind quintet and string quartet, as well as an orchestral work. He later received the Alan Menken Award, a distinction given annually by the legendary Disney composer.

Austin has remained busy composing a slew of scores for nearly ninety productions, ranging from short and feature films, to computer games, TV shows and commercials, corporate videos, podcasts, video art installations and even books on tape.

He has also had success as a concert composer. His concert works have been performed through various Manhattan venues, and across the pond in Europe. His commissions include works for the Black Sea Philharmonic in Constanta, Romania, two orchestral works for the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra in Port Charlotte, Florida, a chamber work for the Colorado Music Teacher's Association and an orchestra piece for the Colorado Youth Symphony and, for the Thorton Symphony Orchestra at the University of Southern California, "Space, Time and Plexiglass", in honor of the works of filmmaker Joss Whedon.

CAPTAIN ABU RAED is a limited edition release of 1000 units. The first 100 copies ordered through the website will include a booklet signed by composer Austin Wintory.
