Original Motion Picture Soundtracks: JE HAIS LES ACTEURS / LE MARIAGE DU SIÈCLE / FACHODA, LA MISSION MARCHAND / NEW YORK BLACKOUT / UN ESCARGOT DANS LA TÊTE / DOCTEUR JUSTICE / TROP C'EST TROP

World Premiere CD Release. 3-CD set.
16-page CD booklet with French and English liner notes by Nicolas Magenham.

In collaboration with Gruppo Sugar, Music Box Records presents a 3-CD set featuring seven French soundtracks composed between 1975 and 1986: Je hais les acteurs (I Hate Actors) composed by Roland Vincent, Le Mariage du siècle (Marriage of the Century) composed by Jean Morlier, Fachoda, la mission Marchand, New York Blackout (Blackout), and Un escargot dans la tête (Snails in the Head) all composed by Didier Vasseur, Docteur Justice (Doctor Justice) composed by Pierre Porte and Trop c’est trop (Too Much Is Too Much) composed by Jean Bouchéty and Christian Chevallier.

In 2018, Music Box Records released the first volume of the box set Rare Soundtracks which was very quickly sold out. This second volume puts the spotlight on very different soundtracks genres (comedy, drama, action, thrillers, fantasy, historical): two extraordinary unsung composers (Roland Vincent and Jean Morlier) for two rather atypical French-style comedy films, a representative sample of Didier Vasseur’s works for cinema and television in the 1970s and three great French pop and film music arrangers who have left their mark on the 1970s pop culture (Pierre Porte, Jean Bouchéty and Christian Chevallier).

The present 3-CD edition has been fully remastered from the master tapes and includes a 16-page booklet with liner notes by Nicolas Magenham

  2. Beat Records melden sich mit zwei neuen Alben aus der Sommerpause zurück:

Tutti possono arricchire tranni i poveri - Franco Bixio, Fabio Frizzi & Vince Tempera

    Zitat

Tutti possono arricchire tranne i poveri is a 1976 film directed by Mauro Severino, starring Enrico Montesano, Barabara Bouchet and Anna Mazzamauro. It tells the story of a couple who comes into sudden wealth thanks to a football lottery and of their vicissitudes in blowing the newfound fortune.
The music for this funny and oblique comedy was composed by a trio of musicians very much industrious throughout the 1970s: Franco Bixio, Fabio Frizzi and Vince Tempera. These three musicians had developed a defined triangular identity, composing wonderful scores such as 7 note in nero, Sella D'Argento, Godzilla il re dei Mostri, Il secondo tragico Fantozzi, Febbre da Cavallo, Roma l'altra faccia della violenza, I quattro dell'Apocalisse and many more.
It was an incredible and prolific collaboration that gifted Italian cinema with iconic scores, celebrated here once again with this unreleased score that doesn't delude expectations, released as part of the DDJ series and presented in a transparent jewel case and featuring a 12-page booklet designed by Daniele De Gemini, mastering by Claudio Fuiano and liner notes by Marco Ferretti.

Quando la coppia scoppia - Piero Umiliani

    Zitat

Quando La Coppia Scoppia is a 1981 film directed by Steno and starring Enrico Montesano, Claude Brasseur and Dalila Di Lazzaro in a comedy in which our protagonist Enrico Granata (Montesano) is facing a matrimonial crisis as a third party (Brasseur) tries to steal his wife (Di Lazzaro).
A movie gifted with a score by Piero Umiliani, until now completely unreleased, one of the last composed by him and which denotes, once again, the Maestro's proficiency in jazz orchestrations and provides rhythms for every situation, coloring the sparkling atmosphere of the movie.
We find various orchestrations of the main theme, cues with a sexy flavor for a handful of nocturnal sequences and two tracks reused from prior films scored by Umiliani, Johnny Moggi Quintet (1975) and News! News! News! (1979).
It's a nice tribute to the great Tuscan Maestro that can't be missing from his fans' collections and which we are glad to offer in the DDJ series, namely dedicated to music of the 70s and 80s. The CD is presented in a transparent jewel case with a 12-page booklet, with mastering by Enrico De Gemini, graphic layout by Daniele De Gemini and liner notes by Marco Ferretti.

Chris' Soundtrack Corner proudly presents the soundtrack to Metralleta Stein, an adventurous crime thriller written and directed by José Antonio de la Loma, taken for the first time from the first generation tapes (previ ous releases were taken from the LP master). This film was the third movie in a trilogy of crime thrillers involving Police Comisario Emilio Mendoza; the first two had featured the intrepid Comisario investigating urban crime and drug traffickers; Metralleta Stein is a more resolved thriller in which Mendoza, played by Francisco (Paco) Rabal, is a vicious lawman intent on capturing fugitive gangster Mariano Beltrán (John Saxon) at all costs. Character drama is the focus of this escape-and-pursuit thriller as it ranges from the skyscrapers of downtown Barcelona, across the French Pyrénées and into a conclusive confrontation in the tranquil Perpignan countryside.

The film has an interesting choice of musical accompaniment, being comprised of stock music licensed from previous films or music libraries held by Italy's Creazioni Artistiche Musicali (C.A.M.). The seventeen tracks that comprise the Metralleta Stein score were either composed specifically for that music library or used in previous movies, and include cues by five different composers. Stelvio Cipriani is responsible for more of the Metralleta Stein score than any other composer, with eight cues from previous films appearing throughout the movie; Daniele Patucchi has three (one library track and two cues from previous films), as do the jazz/funk duo of Mario Molino and Duilio Radici. Carlo Rustichelli has two tracks and Luis E. Bacalov, one. These seventeen pieces of music make up both the film's underscore and its few source music tracks; two are bonus tracks appearing on CD for the first time.

The variety of music in Metralleta Stein (the film's title refers to the type of machine gun used by the bandit Beltrán) is a curious but arguably quite effective mélange. While some cues by Cipriani and Patucchi provide a more traditionally recurrent type of musical accompaniment in the manner of theme-and-variation, most of the other cues are standalone pieces, but all provide a kind of drive, energy, and tension that benefits the film through their similar foundation in jazz and pop musical idioms. While compiling a score out of bits and pieces of music from previous films or libraries was never a rare practice in filmmaking in Europe or the United States, what is fairly unique about Metralleta Stein is the taking of this cornucopia of music and releasing it as its own compiled movie soundtrack album. From the energetic pizzazz and infectious swing of Patucchi, Bacalov, and Molino/Radici to the heartfelt and affecting harmonic melodies of Cipriani and Rustichelli, this is a score to savor as much for its distinctiveness as for its disparity.

Chris' Soundtrack Corner is pleased to revisit this elusive score in an expanded CD presentation with improved sound quality and more music than previous releases. It is being released concurrently with Stelvio Cipriani's Second Spring, an original score largely replaced by library music from the same composer.

The Metralleta Stein soundtrack album is produced by Christian Riedrich and mastered by Stefan Betke. The CD is accompanied by a 12-page illustrated booklet designed by Aletta Heinsohn featuring detailed, exclusive notes on the film and its score by film music journalist Randall D. Larson, who deconstructs the score's elements in detail.

  5. Zitat

Chris' Soundtrack Corner proudly presents for the first time the complete soundtrack to Second Spring, a West German/Italian coproduction released in 1975, written and directed by Ulli Lommel (1944-2017). Lommel is considered one of the most consistently creative filmmakers to come from the New German Cinema, with 65 credits as director in a variety of genres. The movie stars Curd Jürgens as womanizing bon vivant who has finally come to terms with growing old and decided to settle down and enjoy his second spring by marrying Gertrud (Irmgard Schönberg, in her only film credit), a beautiful woman several decades his junior. But when Fox returns to his womanizing ways, Gertrud withdraws from him and discards her husband's companionship altogether, flagrantly exhibiting her own sexual appetites for younger and wilder liaisons of both genders, which inevitably leads to a grievous confrontation with her aged husband.

The entire score to Second Spring was a mix of original music and library tracks by the highly prolific and accomplished Italian composer Stelvio Cipriani (1937-2018). He had actually composed a fairly extensive original score for the film, but, unaccountably, most of it was replaced by library tracks for the film's final mix, with only a few cues from the original score remaining in the film. As a result, the film score is quite a curiosity; its soundtrack remains effective and quite lovely, with both the previously-used tracks and the bits of original cues left in the film providing a melodic wash of romantic fragrance and appealing soft jazz in the composer's finest form.

The music for Second Spring thus remains an interesting oddity in the composer's filmography. Cipriani composed fifteen motion pictures in 1975 – of which Second Spring proved to be one of his most persuasive and melodic scores, even with more than half of its musical content tracked in from previous scores. The topic of the film is not unusual: Cipriani had scored a number of sex-comedies and dramas in Italy and Germany during the 1970s, and he'd had library tracks originating from previously-composed films show up regularly in new movies, including the same year's Spanish crime thriller, Metralleta Stein, which is being released concurrently by Chris' Soundtrack Corner. But Second Spring is unusual in that Cipriani had composed at least a large portion of its score already, and found those cues removed in favor of an almost wholly recycled soundtrack.

Chris' Soundtrack Corner is pleased to make the Second Spring soundtrack available, especially its previously unheard tracks, for the first time. This album is produced by Christian Riedrich and mastered by Stefan Betke. The CD is accompanied by a 12-page illustrated booklet designed by Aletta Heinsohn featuring detailed, exclusive notes on the film and its score by film music journalist Randall D. Larson, who deconstructs the score's elements in detail.

Dragon’s Domain Records, to be distributed through buysoundtrax.com, presents THE JOHN MORGAN COLLECTION, VOLUME 1, featuring world premiere releases of music from several projects the composer has been involved with across his career.

John Morgan is best known as a leading reconstructionist of vintage film scores, in partnership with composer/conductor William T. Stromberg. With Morgan’s expertise in transcription and orchestration and Stromberg’s capability as a conductor, the pair have been involved in restoring significant film scores for new recordings, allowing rare historic and artistic film music in many genres to be recorded and released, many in complete form, for the first time.

THE JOHN MORGAN COLLECTION, VOLUME 1 gathers together a number of Morgan’s lesser-known, independent short film scores, and one score for an audio play broadcast on radio. The scores demonstrate Morgan’s affinity to the form and style of classic film music and on their own contain some remarkable music which we are pleased to share.

Dragon’s Domain Records is excited to present the world premiere compact disc release of these scores included on THE JOHN MORGAN COLLECTION, VOLUME 1, remastered and reconstructed from the composer’s own elements by James Nelson at Digital Outland with assistance from composer William Stromberg. PRE-ORDER.
    EXPECTED SHIPPING: AUGUST 26th

In December 1985 composer Ron Goodwin attended his very last film scoring session.
It was at Easy Sound Studio in Copenhagen, and the film his music was recorded for, was an ambitious Danish animated feature called “Valhalla”, based on Peter Madsen’s comics of the same name.

At the time of it’s release in 1986, “Valhalla” had become the most expensive film in Danish film history, and the 4 years of production chaos had taken it’s toll on the many devoted crew members, who had worked tirelessly to see the film come to life.

Now, some 30 years later, the film remains a classic in Denmark, and part of reason for it’s continued success is due to the wonderful symphonic score by legendary English composer Ron Goodwin.

Originally Danish composers Bent Hesselmann and Jussi Adler Olsen (now a famous author) were assigned with scoring the film. Part of their music was incorporated into the score by Ron Goodwin, and their original contribution to the films 10 minute pilot receives a world premiere release on this album.

After “Valhalla”, Ron Goodwin gave up film scoring, and focused on conducting instead. He remained active until the days before his death in January 2003.

PlantSounds are extremely proud to present this Anniversary Edition of the music from “Valhalla”, which includes:
    * The score, as presented on earlier releases by Replay and Label X, but remastered by Audioplanet for this release.
    * Never before heard demos for Valhalla by Ron Goodwin (only available on the CD).
    * Music from the 10 minute Pilot of Valhalla, composed by Bent Hesselman and Jussi Adler Olsen. World premiere release.(Only available on the CD).
    * A 16 page booklet containing an in depth look at Valhalla, and the music. Written by Brian Iskov.

Quartet Records and Paramount Pictures present the expanded, remastered edition of the iconic score by Philippe Sarde (GHOST STORY, LORD OF THE FLIES, PIRATES, CÉSAR ET ROSALIE) for a Roman Polanski horror tale THE TENANT. Based on the popular novel LE LOCATAIRE CHIMERIQUE by Roland Topor, the film was directed by Polanski, who also co-wrote the screenplay with his usual partner, Gérad Brach. It co-stars Isabelle Adjani, Melvyn Douglas, Shelley Winters and Jo Van Fleet. Although the film was given a cold reception at the Cannes Film Festival in 1976, over the years it has become a cult film, and one of the most valued in the career of the famous and controversial Polish director. THE TENANT was also Polanski’s third production with Paramount after the classics ROSEMARY’S BABY and CHINATOWN.

One of the most important aspects of THE TENANT is that it was the first collaboration between Polanski and composer Philippe Sarde—who was only 28 years old when he composed the score. The music featured a complicated orchestration that required an unusual arrangement of the orchestra. The use of crystal harmonica gives the score a disturbing and bleak character.

Although the music was acclaimed and long desired by collectors around the world, it was necessary to wait until 2000 to have the score released by Universal Music France as part of its collection Ecoutez le cinema!, where it was paired with Tess, the second and brilliant collaboration between Sarde and Polanski. Now, thanks to the discovery of the original multi-track elements in the Paramount vaults, with access to the complete recording sessions at CTS, London, under the baton of Carlo Savina, the score of THE TENANT can be released in its entirety, including tracks not used in the final edit of the film, alternates, as well as the album-specific montages prepared by the composer for an MCA album that never materialized.

This CD has been produced by Neil S. Bulk, remixed by Michael McDonald at Private Island Sound, and mastered by Doug Schwartz, with additional restoration by Chris Malone, and approved by the composer. The package includes a 16-page full-color booklet with detailed liner notes by Stéphane Lerouge.

Quartet Records, Universal Pictures, Universal Music Group and Geffen Records present the long-requested expanded release of the masterful score by Philippe Sarde (THE TENANT, TESS, QUEST FOR FIRE, LES CHOSES DE LA VIE) for GHOST STORY, directed by John Irvin in 1981. Based on the 1979 novel by Peter Straub, the film stars Fred Astaire, Melvyn Douglas, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., John Houseman, Craig Wasson and Alice Krige. It follows a group of elderly businessmen in New England who gather to recount their involvement in a woman’s death decades prior when one of them suspects her ghost has been haunting him.

One of the most outstanding features of GHOST STORY is the classic, evocative score by Philippe Sarde, without a doubt one of his most important works and one of the best soundtracks of the eighties. Using a melancholy, haunting main theme, a beautiful and obsessive love theme, and a gothic orchestration with some touches of Bartók and Stravinsky, Sarde was able to build a solid and coherent “symphony of horror.” The music was recorded with a large orchestra at Universal Studios Recording Stage, under the baton of Peter Knight, who also provided the orchestration.

This CD has been carefully produced, remixed and mastered by Mike Matessino from the original multi-track elements, courtesy of Universal Pictures. This new edition follows the composer’s original album concept as a “symphony of horror,” expanding the program with almost 20 minutes of unreleased music, including some key passages not included in the original MCA album. The package comes with a 24-page full-color booklet including detailed liner notes by film music writer Jeff Bond.
