Nun auch mein Senf.
Es ist eine etwas schwierige Situation. Die neuen Alben (2018er Remaster) sind nichts Halbes und nichts Ganzes. Sie sind vielleicht eine Zwischenlösung, bis die Film-Mixes in kompletter Form erscheinen. Bis dahin bieten Star Wars und Return of the Jedi in ihren diesjährigen Ausführungen klanglich signifikante (insbesondere Star Wars) und editorisch leichte Verbesserungen und man kann die alten Ausgaben durch die neuen getrost ersetzen.
Bei The Empire Strikes Back unterscheidet sich die Film-Mischung (beziehungsweise die alternativen Einspielungen) allerdings so deutlich von der Album-Version, dass klar wird, wie eine zufriedenstellende Lösung aussehen könnte:
Die alten Alben (2015er Remaster) in friedlicher Koexistenz mit der kompletten Filmmusik als Film-Mix (2018er "Remaster"). Was aufgrund der großen Unterschiede insbesondere bei Empire sehr sinnig ist.
Der Film-Mix von Empire ist einfach deutlich anders — er klingt sehr gut, ist aber inkonsistent und teilweise als Hörerlebnis außerhalb des Films weniger zu gebrauchen (siehe @Sebastian Schwittays Kommentar)(Die Prequels interessieren mich nicht.)

Die Album-Mixes sind also weiterhin nur auf dem Original-Album enthalten und die zwei Bonus-Tracks ein wenig überflüssig. Trotzdem nett!

Zitat1.) This new release was taken from Digital Masters and multi-track tape discovered at MGM.
2.) It has the entire score plus recreations of the two suites that appeared on the song album using the film mixes (They were remixed for the song album), but sound fairly close.
3.) The only thing that isn't included are a couple of bonus tracks on the original releases, which seem to be just element tracks taken from the full mixes and given how awful they sounded we decided not to include them.
IMHO, this sounds light years better than the original release of the RAIN MAN score.

Endlich ist es soweit. Die komplette Filmmusik zu Rain Man wird von Notefornote Music veröffentlicht!
Das geschah zwar bereits zuvor in Form von Bootlegs und einer darauf basierenden, offiziellen Veröffentlichung durch Perseverance Records, aber nun ist man an die Originalbänder gekommen.
Und das klingt entsprechend gut!

Taken from a pristine digital source and tapes we had found at MGM, we feel this is the best representation of Hans Zimmer's wonderful score to Rain Man. *ausgrab*
Wegen der tollen Veröffentlichungs-Texte ist total an mir vorbei gegangen, dass die alten Album-Bänder neu abgetastet wurden und seit 2016 auch digital zur Verfügung stehen.
Grund genug für mich, die lange Zeit von mir (für Empire) favorisierte ...
- Imperial Audiophile Edition (Fan-Projekt von 2010/2012), die auf die bis dato jeweils besten Quellen zurückgreift (vor allem Original-Album auf CD und Schallplatte) mit dem
- Remaster von 2015 (24 Bit / 192 kHz)
zu vergleichen.
Ich kann mich den Eindrücken hier, dass die alte CD in Teilen (Solo/Princess) besser klänge, nicht anschließen. Der neue Master ist ein klarer Sieger, klingt deutlich natürlicher, ausgewogener und detaillierter. Hier scheint ein vorbildlicher Remaster geschehen zu sein. Keine Dynamik-Einebnungen, keine Kompression -- einfach traumhaft.
Nun bin ich auf die im Mai erscheinende Version gespannt und freue mich aufs weitere Vergleichen.
(Für die komplette Filmmusik von Empire wird die Imperial Audiophile Edition immer noch ihre Bewandnis haben, aber das Album hat nun auf jeden Fall eine ordentliche, wenn auch nicht physische, Veröffentlichung erfahren.)
