Produced by David O. Selznick in 1944, SINCE YOU WENT AWAY is one of the signature films made during the Second World War. The story of an American family struggling to make due while their husband and father is in the service, the picture is an epic story with dramatic, comedic and searing patriotic moments. Max Steiner’s score, for which he won his third Academy Award, is filled with lovely motifs and powerful dramatic climaxes. His development of the material and deft interpolations of patriotic melodies results in a musical fabric that speaks to the heart of the American character.

This 2-CD set presents the complete thematic score to SINCE YOU WENT AWAY, taken from the composer’s personal acetates which are preserved in the Max Steiner Collection at Brigham Young University. Recorded at Samuel Goldwyn Studios under optimum conditions, the audio quality is superb. For the most part, the discs were in excellent condition, although a few were actually broken and had to be pieced back together (including, unfortunately, the disc containing the Main Title). The lion’s share of the score, we are pleased to say, is in great shape and the 2-CD set concludes with a special suite of themes from the score recorded by studio musical director Lou Forbes for distribution to radio stations. 70 page book with notes by James V. Klingen sehr schön, die Clips bei SAE. Und niemand hat bessere Booklets als die BYU-VÖs. Die wird dann früher oder später wohl auch geordert werden müssen...

Hab den Eindruck, dass in letzter Zeit eine Art Revival des Golden Age stattfindet.

Wobei Dark Victory und The Letter klanglich leider etwas hmpf sind. Aber besser wars halt wohl nicht zu machen...

Das gilt für fast alle älteren Scores, da diese von den alten Azetatplatten abgenommen wurden. Insbesondere die älteren RKO Aufnahmen sind recht rauschig. Dennoch sind sie für 70 - 80 Jahre immer noch überraschend gut hörbar
