Die Musik hierzu stammt von Nigel Clarke und Michael Csányi-Wills (Der kleine Eisbär, Der kleine Vampir) und bot den Komponisten, eine andere Seite von ihrem Schaffen zu präsentieren. Neben u.a. dem prominenten Einsatz des Cellos gelingt es den Komponisten wunderbar das Setting einzufangen und musikalisch zu charakterisieren (die Nachtclub-Szenerie, das gewaltbereite raue Umfeld…). ENGLISH VERSION: The Baseline is the centre of East London’s seedy club scene—and the queue at the door usually stretches to the next block. Danny works at the door – breaking up fights or dealing with drunken youngsters. But when he saves the club owner and local gang leader, Terry, from a hitman he finds himself up to his neck in the underground scene he’d so bitterly wanted to avoid. Danny is promoted to manager, but only on the condition that he turns a blind eye to the shady dealings taking place on and off the dance floor. Danny and his girlfriend Jessica dream of opening their own club, but Danny is forced to make the ultimate sacrifice when he has to choose between loyalty, morality, and his own dreams of escape. The music was written by Nigel Clarke and Michael Csányi-Wills (The Little Polar Bear, The Little Vampire), offering the composers a chance to showcase a different side of their work. With prominent use of the cello, among other techniques, the composers are remarkably successful in capturing the setting and portraying it in the music (the nightclub scene, the violent, gritty environment, etc.). What Lies Beneath (2000) was a first for filmmaker Robert Zemeckis: a serious, adult-minded ghost story starring Michelle Pfeiffer and, in a rare turn (and twist) as the villain, Harrison Ford. Originally developed for Steven Spielberg, the film was a Hitchcockian throwback of slow-burn suspense, with gorgeous Vermont locations supporting the A-list talent. Scoring What Lies Beneath was, as always for Zemeckis, his long-time collaborator, Alan Silvestri (Back to the Future, Forrest Gump). Silvestri conjured up a dark, moody soundscape of suspense, orchestral violence and eerie beauty for the supernatural hauntings and real-life threat that is closer than the heroine realizes—ably recalling the spirit of the classic Hitchcock–Herrmann partnership, with Silvestri’s own vernacular and modern dramatic sense. Varèse Sarabande released What Lies Beneath as a 9-track, 30-minute program at the time of the film. This long-awaited Deluxe Edition premieres the complete score in a 25-track, 60-minute program, with new liner notes by Daniel Schweiger interviewing screenwriter Clark Gregg. In diesen Thread sollen künftig Veröffentlichungen hinein, die höchstwahrscheinlich eher ein kleineren, sehr überschaubaren Kreis von Filmmusikfreunden ansprechen. Score-Veröffentlichungen von hoher oder höherer Popularität bekommen weiterhin ihre eigenen, einzelnen Threads. Der Grund für diesen Sammelbereich liegt in der Tatsache begründet, dass zwar oft viele kleinere, obskurere Releases vorgestellt werden, es jedoch seitens der User sehr wenig bis gar kein Feedback dazu gibt. Darunter leidet die Übersichtlichkeit im "Veröffentlichungs-Unterforum". Das dreizehnte CD-Album in unserer Alhambra-Serie mit Werken des berühmten italienischen Komponisten Angelo Francesco Lavagnino päsentiert die Musiken zu zwei völlig in Vergessenheit geratenen und hier in Deutschland nie gezeigten Filmen. CALYPSO aus dem Jahr 1958 steht in der Tradition der in Italien damals beliebten exotischen Dokumentarfilme und verbindet ganz im Stil des zuvor entstandenen populären L´ULTIMO PARADISO den dokumentarischen Expeditionsbericht über die malerischen Inseln der Antillen mit einer fiktiven Liebesgeschichte zwischen einem Mischlingsmädchen und einem schwarzen Arbeiter und Sänger. Lavagnino hat dafür einen stark folkloristisch geprägten Score geschrieben, der mit ganz besonderem Charme die Calypso-Rhythmen der Antillen in reizvollen und mitreißenden Tänzen verarbeitet, aber auch mit zauberhaften elegischen und romantischen Klängen die Liebesgeschichte sowie diverse Nebenstränge des Films untermalt. Die erfreulicherweise sogar in Stereo vorliegenden Original-Bänder von CALYPSO, die hier zu Gehör kommen, stammen aus dem Nachlass des Komponisten und wurden uns freundlicherweise von dessen Töchtern zur Verfügung gestellt. Als Bonus enthält unsere CD außerdem die bisher nur auf einer unglaublich raren italienischen 10” LP verfügbare 20-minütige dreisätzige “Rapsodia Italiana”, die für den von Walt Disney produzierten und mit neun Kameras aufgenommenen kurzen Dokumentarfilm ITALIA ´61 IN CIRCARAMA komponiert worden war, der auf der Weltausstellung in Turin von Mai bis Oktober 1961 sogar täglich gezeigt wurde, um das damals ganz neue Circarama-Verfahren zu promoten. A citizen of the world, Tiomkin was born in Ukraine, educated in Russia, triumphed in Berlin and Paris before coming to New York. Wird wahrscheinlich - ähnlich wie zu THE MASTER - eine Score/Song-Compilation geben, da der Film in den 50ern angesiedelt ist, und demnach wohl auch Einiges an zeitgenössischer populärer Musik im Film zu hören sein wird.

YOUNG & CURSED Music Composed by PATRICK O'MALLEY For Intrada's latest release, composer Patrick O'Malley chose to eschew the current sound-design approach of many modern-day horror films and lean into a more traditional (and frankly fan-embraced) style of horror scoring. Composers from earlier decades always lauded the opportunities provided by horror films to embrace experimentation that were not often afforded in other genres. It provided an opportunity not only to embrace dissonance as would be expected, but also the lyrical side so often ignored in horror films today. Think Jerry Goldsmith's delicate theme for Carol Ann balanced alongside the aggressive action in Poltergeist. The two can easily coexist in a horror setting. As O'Malley describes in his notes: One of the best things that can be given to any composer (of film music or otherwise) is a large canvas. When I first read Andrew [Chiaramonte] and Emmett [Alston]'s script for Young & Cursed, I initially thought that the film would only need light touches from the music: subtle electronics with the occasional reverb-submerged piano and grit-filled jump-scare stinger (after all, the plot outline is a bunch of kids in a cabin getting spooked for 90 minutes!). But, upon seeing a rough cut of the film and hearing [director] Andrew passionately discuss his goal of putting the audience in a larger frame of mind about the spiritual nature of good and evil, a much different sound came to me: a traditional-style score combining orchestra, choir, synths, electronics and a battery of homemade “found object” instruments. O'Malley may not be a name known to many, as Young & Cursed is his first full-length film score after working on several shorts and in the classical music scene. Hopefully this score is the harbinger of many more feature-length film assignments to come.
