John Carpenter wagt sich auf ein neues Feld: Musik für ein Graphic Novel. Am 07. August erscheint mit CATHEDRAL seine Musik zur gleichnamigen Geschichte. Seine Frau und Produzentin Sandy King verlegt unter dem Namen ihrer Produktionsfirma Storm King schon seit Jahren auch Comic-Reihen. Viele davon haben Carpenters Namen im Titel, natürlich aus Marketinggründen. Ich glaube nicht, dass John da tatsächlich aktiv involviert ist. Daher ist es eigentlich nur logisch, dass er nun auch dieses Geschäftsfeld entdeckt und die Musik für eine dieser Geschichten macht.

Von Sacred Bones kommt wieder eine exklusive Auflage, inklusive des Comics und einer nur da erhältlichen Single. Ansonsten gibt es weitere Vinyl-Varianten und eine CD.

Such is the storyline of Cathedral, the thrilling new album and terrifying graphic novel from director and musician John Carpenter, based on a dream Carpenter had in 2024. 

Cathedral has all the drama, dark atmosphere, and frenetic pacing of a classic heavy metal record. Especially designed as the soundtrack to the graphic novel, each track corresponds to a specific section of the book. The liner notes included with the album packaging feature prompts for each track, creating a fully interactive experience. Combined with the graphic novel, it’s the closest thing to a new John Carpenter film in years. 

The music on Cathedral retains all the eerie atmosphere and sinister propulsion of the epochal scores Carpenter created for his films Halloween, The Fog, and Assault on Precinct 13, but this is a much heavier, riff-driven enterprise. Carpenter is a firm believer that music plays a major role in what really makes something scary. That’s first and foremost,” the director says. “It’s all about making the music work.” “This is somewhat different sounding stuff that we've done, but it's done with the same desire in mind,” he adds. “In other words, put this thing on and imagine you're watching a movie. That’s what we want you to do.” 

Daniel Davies’ soaring, snaky guitars take center stage on opener “Primeval,” “Elevator,” and the metal masterpiece “Lord of the Underground” while John Carpenter and Cody Carpenter’s synths take the lead on the ominous “Desolation in the Underworld,” the plaintive “Death of the Mapmaker,” and even converge with strings on “Abandoned Cathedral.” 

Whereas the Lost Themes albums were written as scores to movies of the mind, Cathedral scores the first original graphic novel written by Carpenter, his wife and long-time creative partner, producer and editor Sandy King, and writer Sean Sobczak, published by Storm King Comics. As with all of Carpenter’s musical forays of the last decade-plus, the album will be released by Sacred Bones.

Ich mag das neue Album. Es lief nun ein paar Mal und es vereint alles was man von John Carpenter, Cody Carpenter und Daniel Davies kennt und mag (oder auch nicht) - bietet aber auch ein paar ungewohnte Aspekte und Unterhalt insgesamt gut ohne zu eintönig zu werden.

Synth Arpeggios, lang gehaltene E-Gitarre Akkorde, atmosphärische Pads, pulsierende Synth-Bässe aber auch immer mal synthetische Chorsamples, Orgel und Solo-Violine (vermutlich aber auch aus der Konserve). Wie in Carpenters Scores werden immer wieder die Arpeggios / Motive aufgegriffen. Insgesamt würde ich aber sagen, wer noch nie etwas mit Carpenters Musik anfangen konnte, kann auch hier getrost einen Bogen machen. 

Der Track "The Ferryman" erinnerte mich am Anfang stark an Ludwig Göranssons Score zu "Tenet". 

Mir gefällt die Musik sehr gut, da der Aufbau am ehesten einem neuen Score von ihm nahe kommt und ich kann mir vorstellen, dass das Ganze als Begleitung zum Lesen des gleichnamigen Graphic Novel durchaus gut wirkt.

Jetzt verstehe ich, was du mit der Tenet-Anspielung meintest. Mein Favorit ist "Inside Out", hat was von rockigeren Prince-of-Darkness-Vibes. Und der Piano-Teil in "Death of the Mapmaker" hatte bei mir Erinnerungen an "Cigarette-Burns" hevorgerufen (Regie war John Carpenter, die Musik war vom Sohnemann).

Ich hab jetzt einige Durchläufe mit der CD durch, und mir gefällt es besser als die letzten Lost Themes-Alben. Es lässt sich gut weghören 👍

Höre das Album gerade zum zweiten Mal. So ein Kracher wie "My Name is Death" vom letzten Lost-Themes-Album fehlt zwar, aber insgesamt kann ich nur zustimmen: Lässt sich gut durchhören. Ist alles tatsächlich wesentlich rockiger, wenngleich auch nicht ganz so heavy wie GHOSTS OF MARS. Erinnert wirklich mehr an seine Sachen aus den 80ern, nur eben mit mehr Gitarren
