Das ist ein sehr cooler Score und das Album war mit unter 40 MInuten auch immer recht kuz. Merkwürdig, dass Harry Gregson-Williams nicht auf dem Cover genannt wird, hat er doch eins der zentralen Themen komponiert.

Ok...hab gerade im jwfan Forum gelesen, dass er nicht mit auf dem Cover steht, weil sie die Film Credits nehmen mussten. Stéphane Humez von hans-zimmer.com hat das Album produziert.

First thing I need to say is we got help and support from most of the people who worked on it : Rodriguez (he spent quite some time with us, very cool guy, and he keeps logs of everything on the films he does, so we had all the details. And Robert is also a real film score connaisseur ), HGW, Boardman, Heitor & Gavin, John Debney...

Rodriguez's first idea was to seek out John Williams, no less. The film had a lot of JW temp in it. It's what I hinted in another thread a few weeks ago. The "Spy Wedding" was temped with Duel Of The Fates (it kinda scared all the composers lol so that's why Rodriguez did it himself with Los Lobos !).

Williams saw the film and liked a lot how his music was used in the temp and gave his music another meaning, but the schedule was impossible for him so he had to pass.

Rodriguez reached out to Danny Elfman (Danny was supposed to score The Faculty so they knew each other, but scheduling conflicts again, it couldn't work). Robert really wanted a Nightmare Before Christmas type song, which Danny agreed to do. But he had no time to handle the whole score, and told Robert "why don't YOU do it yourself ?".

So the seed was planted (Robert hadn't scored anything himself by that point) but he still needed solid people with him. Robert's idea was always to split up work between people and not have one person do it all. He turned to Hans, who was already full, but told him he should go with HGW.

Harry started working on the score, provided a main theme. Boardman was hired to go closer in style to Elfman's song (and in general's Floop's part of the score). Robert started writing themes (one with his brother Marcel) and brought Los Lobos to work with him.

Harry had to drop mid-production, had some issues that prevented him from working for a few weeks. That's where Hans got Gavin & Heitor on board to pick up where Harry left so Gavin & Heitor did a bulk of the work using Harry & Robert's themes, and add new things. Harry didn't really intend to come back as he was happy his theme was appreciated & used, and thought the thing was in good hands with his pals Gavin & Heitor, plus he had other projects on the way.

At that point, the score was recorded & mixed (Elfman's song, Boardman, HGW/Heitor/Gavin, Rodriguez...).

But the final result didn't entirely work, the film had some reshoots, was pushed a couple of months, and they wanted the score to be reworked. Robert reached out to Elfman again who had a spot in his schedule so he did a few cues with a new spy theme. And they brought in John Debney to "fix" the whole thing and make it all work, writing new cues, using Elfman's new material (they didn't work together but Debney was thrilled to have a chance to work with Danny's elements), but also HGW's, Rodriguez's...

So, no one was really "fired". Sure it was weird for Heitor & Gavin to find out a bunch of their stuff wasn't there anymore when discovering the film lol, but that's just usual Hollywood. Even Debney tried some ideas & cues that weren't used, they sticked with Gavin & Heitor instead (the whole final action sequence comes to mind).

The good thing is we had both versions of the score, the initial full one and the "Debney/Elfman" rework (thank you John for keeping that !). Plus Rodriguez found in his archives a few minutes of early demos of his themes (they're in low quality so don't be mad, that's the only way they exist anymore "we didn't keep WAV files back then, too big !" Robert said lol).

I didn't try to go "version 1" and "version 2" of the score because since Debney wrote a lot of inserts and was never meant to rewrite everything, I tried to have the score presented as close to how it is in the film on Disc 1, and basically an "alternate" version of the score on Disc 2...

The track crediting was an absolute nightmare as you can imagine, but I detailed it all in the packaging !

Irgendwie habe ich immer Vorurteile, wenn mehrere Komponisten an einem Werk beteiligt sind. Nur bei THE DARK KNIGHT von Hans Zimmer und James Newotn Howard fand ich es passend, da man trennte zwischen den Actionszenen und den emotionalen Passagen / Seiten der Charaktere.

Intrada presents an expanded edition of Robert Rodriguez's Spy Kids (2001). Across Rodriquez's body of work his name appears as writer, director, producer, cinematographer, editor and composer, among others. Since his mind is working in all those places, he enjoys starting the scoring process as early as possible. The musical journey for Spy Kids was more unconventional, yet the result was a cohesive score that brought the film’s crazy world to vivid life. Rodriguez needed a song for the main antagonist and wanted something in the realm of Danny Elfman’s style, so he reached out to Elfman himself. Unfortunately, Elfman could only write one song due to his schedule—“Floop’s Song (Cruel World)." Next, Hans Zimmer and Harry Gregson-Williams screened and loved the film, but ultimately Zimmer could not take on the project. Gregson-Williams was available, however, and came up with some cues and ideas based on a guitar tune he wrote. This became known as the “Cortez Family” theme. Then Gregson-Williams had to leave the project, so Rodriquez himself took over some of the scoring duties. A few months later, Gavin Greenaway and Heitor Pereira adapted Rodriguez's melodies. By then Elfman was free and able to compose additional music for the film, including the score's prominent action theme. With all these hands involved, Rodriguez needed one composer to come in and orchestrate, conduct and expand on the Elfman material as well as provide additional scoring to tie everything together. Enter composer John Debney who masterfully assembled everything into a coherent work in just two weeks.

For this new release done with the generous cooperation of Paramount Pictures, CD producer Stéphane Humez scoured through all the recordings and pulled together a 2-CD set featuring all the music. CD 1 is the complete score as it appears in the film. Disc 2 features a wealth of alternates, including the Gregson-Williams scoring that was largely updated after he left the project. The disc concludes with Robert Rodriguez's Sketchbook, a suite of demos of his original themes. The album was mastered by Maxime Marion with liner notes by Kaya Savas.

Spy Kids follows siblings Carmen and Juni Cortez, who discover that their seemingly ordinary parents are actually retired secret agents. When their parents are kidnapped by an evil scientist, the children must become spies themselves, using high-tech gadgets and their own courage to rescue their mom and dad. What follows is an energetic colorful adventure that launched a franchise.
