Sudden Death (1995) was the second of two Peter Hyams films starring “the muscles from Brussels,” Jean-Claude Van Damme. After 1994’s Timecop, Sudden Death was patterned on the durable “Die Hard in a…” premise: here, the contained space is Pittsburgh Civic Arena, wired to explode by terrorists at the conclusion of game seven of the Stanley Cup finals. Sudden Death was received as an above-average action film, with strong action and suspense as well as an emotional element: fire marshal Darren McCord (Van Damme) must rescue his daughter from the terrorists, even as he fights and kills their underlings—and saves a game-winning goal on the ice. Peter Hyams’ directorial vision has always been to score action with percussion and raw affect, not artifice. Sudden Death was the first of his three collaborations with John Debney (followed by The Relic and End of Days), receiving a pulse-pounding, orchestral tour de force from the young composer. “John Debney understood every emotion and where they needed to be amplified,” Hyams says today. “He’s a wonderful talent, and I adored working with him.” Sudden Death was released by Varèse Sarabande in a 9-track, half-hour program at the time of the film. This Deluxe Edition expands the program to 28 tracks and 64 minutes, with Hyams and Debney newly interviewed by Daniel Schweiger for the liner notes. THE SUGARLAND EXPRESS Original Motion Picture Soundtrack LLLCD 1650 Universal Pictures Film Music Classics Collection Music composed and conducted by John Williams Limited Edition of 5000 Units RETAIL PRICE: $22.98 La-La Land Records and Universal Studios proudly present the twenty-first title within the acclaimed Universal Pictures Film Music Classics Collection – THE SUGARLAND EXPRESS, a world premiere release of music from the original soundtrack for the very first collaboration between director Steven Spielberg and composer John Williams (JAWS, E.T., SCHINDLER’S LIST). Celebrating its 50th anniversary, THE SUGARLAND EXPRESS, released in 1974, stars Goldie Hawn as a Texas mother who breaks her husband (William Atherton) out of a prison farm when she is denied custody of their baby. Together they hijack a highway patrolman (Michael Sacks) and lead a convoy of media, onlookers, and countless police cars across the state. Spielberg’s first feature film balances comedy, drama and action in what Pauline Kael of The New Yorker called “one of the most phenomenal debut films in the history of movies.” Although Williams’ score never received a prior album release, the 50th anniversary of his historic partnership with Spielberg, along with a revisitation of the film for Universal Studios’ new 4K restoration, yielded the proper conditions to at last create an original soundtrack, which now takes a place of honor in the successful Universal Studios Film Music Classics Collection. While Spielberg originally hoped for a larger scale score for his first movie, Williams convinced him that THE SUGARLAND EXPRESS called for something more intimate. The great Belgian harmonica soloist Toots Thielemans became the principal musical voice of the film, supported by an ensemble of top guitarists and percussionists and a small string ensemble. The resulting music reflects the complex characters and the building tension of the story, with a bluesy, country vibe evoking the landscape and cultural backdrop of the tale. The album presentation, produced by the composer, delivers a distinctive musical journey and features material not used in the completed film. Classics Collection producer Mike Matessino mixed, edited and mastered the album from high resolution transfers of pristine 8-track master tapes, archiving the material as well as conforming the music for a new stereo mix of the film. Matessino also contributes in-depth liner notes detailing the history of the production, the creation of the music, and its place in the legendary Spielberg/Williams collaboration. Art direction by Jim Titus appropriately celebrates this historic premiere release. TRACK LISTING: MUSIC COMPOSED AND CONDUCTED BY JOHN WILLIAMS 1. The Sugarland Express – Main Title 1:29 2. A 2-CD set. Newly remastered and expanded edition. 16-page CD booklet with liner notes by Daniel Schweiger. Limited Edition of 2000 units. In collaboration with Warner Chappell Music, Sony Music and Paramount Pictures, Music Box Records proudly presents the remastered and expanded edition of Gabriel Yared’s score for the 1999 thriller The Talented Mr. Ripley, starring Matt Damon, Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, Cate Blanchett and Phillip Seymour Hoffman, as written for the screen and directed by Anthony Minghella (The English Patient, Cold Mountain, Breaking and Entering). Nominated for five Academy Awards (including Best Original Score, Best Supporting Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay), this movie about a desperately murderous quest for identity, class and love was based on the most notorious character created by author Patricia Highsmith (Strangers on a Train). Previously adapted as Purple Noon with Alain Delon, Anthony Minghella’s version gave a new, tragically vulnerable take on the character, who insinuates himself among jazz loving expatriates (Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow), only to kill the brother he’d always wanted and assume his identity, all while trying to keep his illusion of innocence at any cost. Taking his lush Oscar-winning approach for The English Patient in a new direction to capture both the beat jazz era of the film’s 1959 setting alongside a multi-thematic approach that plays both Ripley’s increasingly psychotic quest for the good life and the wounded, child-like boy that yearns for love and purpose. The score combining striking orchestral melody with suspenseful rhythm, eerie female voices and the music of a dark lullaby (as personified by its title song by Sinéad O’Connor), The Talented Mr. Ripley is a masterpiece of dark romance and suspense that’s a highlight of Yared’s acclaimed collaborations with Anthony Minghella. Celebrating the film's 25th anniversary, this new expanded edition, supervised by Gabriel Yared, has been assembled and remastered from the recording session elements. Disc 1 ("The Film Score") presents the expanded film score with previously unreleased cues. Disc 2 ("The Extras") presents excerpts from the original Sony album, Yared’s demo cues and numerous instrumental tracks that highlight the alternative presentations and edits of the score. The CD comes with a 16-page booklet with liner notes by Daniel Schweiger, who discusses the film and the score including new comments by Gabriel Yared on his career-defining work with Anthony Minghella and film editor Walter Murch. The CD release is limited to 2000 units. DISC 1 - THE FILM SCORE 1. Lullaby for Cain (3:30) Performed by Sinéad O'Connor 2. Italia (0:50) 3. I Hate You (0:50) 4. No, I Like Him (0:54) 5. https://www.varesesarabande.com/collections/cd-club/products/don-davis-the-matrix-the-complete-score-2-cd Few blockbusters can claim to be as influential as The Matrix (1999), written and directed by the Wachowskis. From its super high-concept that has wormed its way into the public’s imagination (what if we’re all just living in a computer simulation?), to Keanu Reeves’ iconic hero Neo, to the brilliant, jaw-dropping and story-based visual effects, The Matrix delivered on all fronts. Its three films grossed over $1.6 billion worldwide, and a fourth is on the way. The Matrix demanded a score that was as unique, sophisticated and imaginative as its concept and action—and got one from composer Don Davis. Davis, who scored the Wachowskis’ Bound (1996), reinvented the symphonic language of the action blockbuster by drawing on cutting-edge concert-hall minimalism and his own background as an avant-garde composer, while maintaining the energy, pace and density required of a studio action film. From the clashing-brass “reflections,” to the racing strings, pounding percussion and flittering, repeating musical “cells,” the Matrix score fits hand-in-glove with the film’s concept of a computer-controlled reality—and offers a unique musical thumbprint that is recognizable sometimes only from a single note or chord. It is the rare commercial triumph that is also an artistic landmark. The Matrix was released by Varèse Sarabande at the time of the film, and then in a Deluxe Edition that fit as much of the score as possible on one CD. By popular demand, this new 2CD set, (also available for Record Store Day as a 3LP set), presents the complete score. Liner notes feature a new interview with Don Davis conducted by Kaya Savas. For Love of the Game (1999) reunited Kevin Costner with one of his most popular subjects—baseball—as he starred as an aging pitcher who throws a perfect game at Yankee Stadium while reflecting upon his long-term relationship. An unexpected choice of material for director Sam Raimi, the film was lauded for its depiction of the sport and its uplifting Americana score by Basil Poledouris. By the late 1990s, Poledouris was renowned for his mastery of a film scoring genre that was, in a way, coming to its end: the romantic, orchestral depiction of masculinity. From barbarians to cyborg cops, cowboys to submariners, Poledouris found the beating heart of heroic male characters who upheld virtues of honor, loyalty and duty, while allowing themselves to be vulnerable to their loved ones. Costner’s Billy Chapel—pitching in his very last game—was an ideal protagonist, and Poledouris responded with a rich, warm, melodic score that goes from the grandeur and scope of America’s national pastime, to the romantic yearning and intimacy of its very human hero. The score navigates a range of orchestral size—from fully symphonic to heartfelt solos—as well as genre, with pop and R&B brought in for contemporary emphasis. For Love of the Game was released as 10-track, 33-minute CD from Varèse Sarabande at the time of the time. The program has been expanded to 35 tracks and over 78 minutes for this Deluxe Edition, with Daniel Schweiger’s liner notes incorporating interview material from Raimi, Poledouris, and the composer’s agent, Richard Kraft. Doom (2005) was a big-budget feature film adaptation of the hit game from id Software, starring Karl Urban, Rosamund Pike and Dwayne Johnson (billed as The Rock). A team of marines are sent through a portal to a research facility on Mars, where they must battle demonic creatures which are revealed to be mutated humans from genetic experiments. Doom was an action-packed romp noted for its nods to videogame culture, creature design by Stan Winston Studios, and lengthy first-person shooter sequence. One of its most successful elements is its forward-thinking score by Clint Mansell, blending orchestra and electronics with authentic “alt. rock” elements, including a remix of the Nine Inch Nails song “You Know What You Are.” Mansell’s score smartly evolves from haunted-house spookiness to balls-out action, all impeccably produced. “I wanted to sort of capture the adrenaline and that sort of metal thrash that goes with the game and world in my opinion. It’s like it needed something edgy,” Mansell said at the time. “The original thought was to do a big orchestral score, and there is some orchestra in it, but it’s a very contemporary-type movie and the score needed to be contemporary, too.” Doom was released as a 22-track, hour-long by Varèse Sarabande at the time of the film. This new Deluxe Edition expands the content to two discs, with 41 tracks and over 140 minutes. The 20-page booklet features liner notes by Daniel Schweiger and two double-page interior spreads of newly commissioned artwork by Micha Huigen. Pleasantville (1998) was a high-concept fantasy-comedy about high-school siblings (Tobey Maguire and Reese Witherspoon) transported into an idyllic, black-and-white 1950s Leave It to Beaver-type TV show. In the hands of writer/director Gary Ross, the film is more than just a fish-out-of-water tale with dazzling VFX—it is a touching character study and potent Civil Rights allegory that received critical acclaim and is fondly remembered today. Scoring Pleasantville was a master of Americana, humor and symphonic scoring, Randy Newman. Newman had cheeky fun with the show-within-the-film’s old-school traditions, but just as the story blossoms into a heartfelt tale of emotional awakening—with a beautiful performance by Joan Allen as a repressed mother—so does the gorgeous score. “Randy is unique in the fact that he can write with a depth of emotion, and he’s also an accomplished satirist,” says Gary Ross in the new liner notes by Tim Greiving. “He could write to the vernacular of what the movie was, but not be limited by it. That’s what the film is trying to do, and it really needs someone who can understand the breadth of those intentions... I’ve never been happier with any score, on any movie.” Features: Varèse Sarabande released Pleasantville’s score album in 1998 as a 17-track, 31-minute edition. As the film celebrates its 25th anniversary, this Deluxe Edition features an expanded program of 34 tracks and 66 minutes. Track List: 1. The Pleasantville Theme 2. Get Ready* 3.
