Kritzerland is proud to present a limited edition soundtrack CD release – three great film scores on one great CD: ELEPHANT WALK/BOTANY BAY/STALAG 17 - FRANZ WAXMAN AT PARAMOUNT Music Composed and Conducted by Franz Waxman Franz Waxman at Paramount. One great composer, one great studio, and an astonishing batch of scores. If Waxman had written only Sunset Blvd. and A Place in the Sun for Paramount he would have been assured his place in the pantheon of great film composers. But he wrote many other fantastic scores for the studio as well, including Sorry, Wrong Number, Alias Nick Beal, Rope of Sand, The Furies, Dark City, Come Back, Little Sheba, Rear Window, Career, and the three scores we’re offering on this world premiere CD release: Elephant Walk, Botany Bay, and Stalag 17. The films are as different as can be, but Franz Waxman brings his musical genius to each. For all three scores we present all of the surviving musical cues. We begin our triple bill with Elephant Walk, a Paramount picture from 1954 starring Elizabeth Taylor, which featured an outstanding score by Franz Waxman. Right from the first chords of the “Prelude,” its lush theme transporting us immediately into the world of the film, we know we are in the safe and brilliant hands of a composer at the top of his game. What follows demonstrates Waxman’s usual adeptness at capturing mood, incident and characters, including his splendid dramatic action cue for the film’s climactic “Elephant Stampede.” While it’s a shame that the entire score hasn’t survived, the cues presented here – in beautiful-sounding stereo – are an excellent representation of Waxman’s contribution to the film. Next up is the 1953 Paramount film Botany Bay, starring Alan Ladd, James Mason, Patricia Medina, Cedric Hardwicke, and Murray Matheson. Waxman’s “Prelude and Foreword” sets the tone of the film and its tale. From there he provides a textbook on film scoring, with adventure and drama on the high seas, with heroes and villains, with drama and suspense – all with the classic Waxman sound. Happily, the majority of the score cues have survived for Botany Bay – close to forty minutes of music, all in crisp, clear mono sound. Stalag 17, the last of our Waxman triple bill, began life as a stage play. In 1953, it was brought to the screen by Paramount Pictures and director Billy Wilder. The film starred William Holden, who won an Oscar for his performance. Stalag 17 is one of the great prisoner-of-war films, right up there with The Great Escape and The Bridge on the River Kwai, both of which came later. For the film, Franz Waxman came up with a brief but perfect score, utilizing “When Johnny Comes Marching Home” as its basis. Otherwise, it’s percussion and brief bits of scoring that work wonderfully well in the film. Again, Waxman’s innate approach to material and his knowing when music is necessary and when it isn’t is what made him one of the greatest film composers in the history of movies. The main title, with its propulsive drums and treatment of “When Johnny Comes Marching Home,” is the perfect start to the film. We present the surviving tracks in mono, as they were recorded. Hans Zimmer macht die Musik für den neuen Film von Christopher Nolan.. keine wirkliche Überraschung.. While I expected him to be doing the music, I definitely didn’t think he would have started writing it yet, especially since the film doesn’t get released until November of 2014. With Zimmer and Nolan having done some amazing work together over the past decade, I truly cannot wait to hear and see their next collaboration next year. Laut imdb* wird Joel McNeely die Musik für die Westernkomödie "A Million Ways to Die in the West" schreiben. Regie, Drehbuch und eine der Rollen übernimmt Seth McFarlane. Zum Cast gehören auch Liam Neeson, Giovanni Ribisi und Neil Patrick Harris. *was man wohl in letzter Zeit wieder mehr Vertrauen schenken darf (Komponist Edwin Wendler erklärte mal auf Facebook, dass es immer immer schwerer wird, in imdb Fakten reinzuschreiben, deren Wahrheit man nicht nachweisen kann). Jedoch lasse ich das Wort "Gerücht" noch in den Thementitel.

Kritzerland is proud to present a world premiere limited edition soundtrack CD release: TOO LATE BLUES Music Composed by David Raksin Too Late Blues (1962) is certainly one of the greatest films ever made about the jazz world. Despite being a studio movie and being scripted, it feels like jazz, like an improvisation. Given the maverick nature of John Cassavetes and the rawness of his first film, Shadows, it was truly bold of Paramount Pictures to hand the reins of a big studio production to someone like Cassavetes. But that’s exactly what happened with Too Late Blues. It was a perfect match between subject matter and filmmaker. In 1959, Cassavetes had starred in a TV series called Johnny Staccato, playing a jazzman who moonlights as a detective. Too Late Blues is a beautifully made film, with great performances and gorgeous black-and-white photography, and a score to die for, by the great David Raksin. There is a lot of jazz in Too Late Blues. The easy way out would have been to do standards, but Raksin wrote all original music for the film, even for the source cues. And what music it is – Raksin at his best, and Raksin at his best is as good as it gets. It didn’t hurt that he was working with some of the best West Coast jazz players of that era, including Red Mitchell, Benny Carter, Shelly Manne, Jimmy Rowles, Milt Bernhart, and the best studio musicians anyone could hope for – including the amazing trumpet player Uan Rasey. Raksin wrote one of his most exquisite and inspired themes for the film, which he titled “A Song After Sundown.” It’s heard in jazz guises, within the dramatic score, and even as a vocalise performed by Stella Stevens’ character. It’s a haunting, melancholy theme filled with sadness and yearning – classic Raksin, as are the jazz cues and the dramatic score. It’s all of a piece – absolute perfection in the picture and wonderful to listen to outside the film as well. This is the world-premiere release of Too Late Blues. We had access to the scoring session masters and the original prerecords done for the “live” playing in the film. The latter were all recorded in one-track mono, while the score cues and some of the source cues were recorded in three-track stereo. Given how the music functions in the film (the first dramatic score cue occurs over an hour into the film), we took a different approach in sequencing the album, trying for an optimal listening experience rather than strict film order – which would have given an hour of jazz cues before the first score cue. We have included all the music written for the film – first the film cues, and then a bonus section filled with alternates and various odds and ends, over seventy-six minutes of prime David Raksin. Too Late Blues is limited to 1000 copies only. The price is $19.98, plus shipping. Am 27. Mai veröffentlicht Digitmovies die Musik zum Spencer/Hill-Western "... continuavano a chiamarlo Trinità", bei uns besser bekannt als "Vier Fäuste für ein Hallelujah". Im Zuge der Veröffentlichung wird auch das Album zum ersten Teil, "Die linke und die rechte Hand des Teufels", wieder neu aufgelegt, die erste Auflage ist ausverkauft.
