Alhambra Records proudly presents on this CD the world premiere release of Angelo Francesco Lavagnino’s complete original score for the 1969 historical drama BEATRICE CENCI which was directed by Lucio Fulci – who later on would reach cult status through his horror movies - and had an international cast with the American actress Adrienne La Russa as Beatrice Cenci, the Italian Tomas Milian as her servant and lover Olimpio and the French actor Georges Wilson as powerful and ruthless patriarch Francesco Cenci. Beatrice Cenci (1577-1599) had been a member of a prominent and wealthy Roman family in the late 16th century known for her tragic life story that has captivated audiences through history. Her father Francesco Cenci was a cruel tyrant who was hated by everyone including his own family, especially Beatrice whom he placed in solitary confinement for deciding to become a nun. He was even rumoured to have repeatedly raped her. Due to this abusive treatment, Beatrice persuaded two servants to help her murder Francesco. This act resulted in a highly publicized trial in which Beatrice, her stepmother and her brother were sentenced to death, provoking widespread sympathy among the Roman populace. In 1969 Fulci´s picture was already the fourth film version of this famous story and in contrast to the previous adaptations he follows the historical events of Beatrice´s life very closely, but uses a quite unconventional non-linear storyline. With the help of some stylish camera work, lush sets and costumes he quite convincingly evokes the harsh 16th century setting and mercilessly attacks the abuse of power as well as the corruption of the Catholic Church. As the singer-songwriter and actor Silvano Spadaccino also received an official credit as co-composer in the film´s main title, till now there has always been some confusion as to who wrote what for this movie. However, Spadaccino and his folk group I Cantastorie were only responsible for the a cappella consolation chants – based on Italian folk songs of the medieval period – which are heard during the film´s prison scenes and for a few tavern songs. Nothing of this music can be heard on our CD as the tapes which we have had at our disposal contain only Lavagnino´s own music. It consists of all the instrumental tracks in the film and of two religious a cappella choir cues (In the Garden/The Pope`s Room). Lavagnino has written a rather intimate score for a medium-sized orchestra which for the most part is an elegy for the tragic fate of the heroine Beatrice Cenci. The beautiful plaintive main theme with its slight Renaissance flavour – due to the use of typical instruments of the period like lute and harpsichord – immediately grabs the attention of the listener and makes it clear where the sympathies of the composer lie. The musical highlight of the score certainly are the torture scenes for which Lavagnino reserved his most extensive symphonic elaboration of the Beatrice Cenci tune interweaved with an even sadder theme with his characteristic use of the high strings and the solo viola. On the other hand, all the musical sequences involving the patriarch Francesco Cenci are infused with a doom-laden brooding bass motif of four notes which seems to suffocate everything just as the cruel tyrant humiliates everyone around him. Besides, Lavagnino has written an agitated musical hunt which resembleses a devilish dance (On the Run) and some festive brass music for the arrival of the Cardinal Lanciani at the Cenci fortress (The Cardinal Arrives). This wonderful CD project – the 18th CD in our Lavagnino series – has only been possible thanks to the generous support of the three daughters of the composer – Bianca, Iudica and Alessandra Lavagnino -, who still had open reel tape copies of the original master tapes in their personal archive which we were allowed to use. Our CD edition which contains a 16-page booklet with extensive liner notes and numerous colour stills from the two movies is limited to 400 copies. Ich höre gerade Naoki Satos Musik zur japanischen Meteorologie Dramaserie Blue Moment. Die Musik ist ein Mix aus Elektronik, Orchester und Solo Vocals. Besonders an dem Score ist der Einsatz der Solo Trompete, gespielt von Eric Miyashiro. Die gelungenen Themen sind wieder sehr prägnant und dramatisch. Das Orchester kommt hauptsächlich bei den ruhigen Passagen zum Einsatz. Es gibt auch ein schönes Solo Klavier Stück. Die Elektronik Stücke sind weniger thematisch geraten. Neben den schönen ruhigen melodischen Passagen ist das Titelstück sicherlich ein Highlight. Meine Lieblingstelle in dem Track beginnt dort ab 2:50. Sehr cooler Part. Insgesamt ein gelungener Score für mich.

Aber die gleiche Albumfassung von CAPRICORN ONE wurde doch 2012 noch einmal von Perserverance veröffentlicht. Die habe ich auch.

Die Outland/Capricorn One CD könnte ich nicht verkaufen wegen der Albumversion zu Capricorn, außerdem hat die nur die diese Version von Kay's Theme. Höre eigentlich nur diese Scheibe seit Jahrzehnten, die Expandierungen sind mehr was für die Sammlung.

Keine Spur von Bronzing, CD ist absolut clean. Hab die Prometheus und insofern ausgesondert.

Dass ist aber schade, dass es die Musik nur digital gibt. Tja, sogar Truffaut/Delerue lohnt sich nicht mehr für die Labels. Wegen der Laufzeit hätte natürlich zum x-ten Mal anderes Material zum Auffüllen einer CD genommen werden müssen.

Hat dein Exemplar von CASSANDRA CROSSING Bronzing oder ist es noch abspielbar? Meins ist leider völlig vergoldet und auf den meisten Playern unlesbar geworden.

Und noch eine schöne unerwartete Veröffentlichung von Universal Music France, leider halt auch wieder nur digital. Was kein Sammler bislang wußte: Delerue hatte für Francois Truffauts berühmtes Meisterwerk DIE SÜSSE HAUT (LA PEAU DOUCE) an 1964 sogar 9 Tracks für eine geplante rund 23-minütige LP zusammengestellt - in Stereo. Offiziell veröffentlicht wurde damals hingegen nur eine Philips-EP mit 4 Tracks, die es dann auch mehr als 35 Jahre später auf den einen oder anderen Delerue-CD-Sampler schafften. Mehr gab es seither vom gesamten Score nicht zu hören, zumal der eher sparsam vertonte Film sogar noch etwas weniger Musik haben dürfte und Truffaut nicht alles davon verwendete. Lerouge schreibt zum (wohl im Delerue-Archiv) wiederaufgefundenen LP-Album dies: "In the spring of 1964, Georges Delerue mixed the soundtrack of La Peau douce in stereo... for a 33 rpm record that was never released. Sixty-two years later, justice has been served: between sad lyricism and a nod to Bernard Herrmann, this major score from the Truffaut-Delerue collaboration is finally available, for the first time in its entirety." Eine CD von diesem absoluten Klassiker der französischen Filmmusik dürfte von Universal kaum mehr zu erwarten sein, dafür gibt es das komplette Album nun bereits auf Youtube:

Stéphane Lerouge hat diese Woche einen neuen digitalen Sarde-Sampler - "Philippe Sarde - The Essentials" - auf dem Universal Music France-Label veröffentlicht, der auch ein paar bislang nicht auf CD greifbare Raritäten aus den frühen 70ern enthält wie LANCELOT DU LAC (1974), LA LIBERTÉ EN CROUPE (1970 - aus diesem leichtfüßigen Track mit den Swingle Singers wurde später an 1982 das LE CHOC-Liebesthema), LE DROIT D´AIMER (1972 - hier erklingt schon das spätere Liebesthema aus LOVESICK von 1985), LES CORPS CÉLESTES (1973 - die Vorlage für MILLE MILLIARDS DE DOLLARS von 1982) und CHARLIE ET SES DEUX NENETTES (1973 - das Tango-Finale). Von letzterem gab es bislang nicht mal eine Single oder EP. Alle 36 Titel stammen aus dem früheren CAM-Katalog bzw. kommen von Sugarmusic France. Das komplette Album ist auch auf Youtube bereits zu finden:

Snow Files of the Week: "Damascus/The Subject", aus "MillenniuM", Episode "Owls" (1998). Als Mitglieder der MillenniuM-Gruppe in einer Moschee in Damaskus ein Stück Holz finden, welches zu dem Kreuz gehörte, an dem Jesus gestorben ist, entzweit sich die Gruppe in zwei Parteien: die "Eulen" und die "Hähne". Während die "Eulen" nicht an die Apokalypse mit dem Jahr 2000 glauben, sondern daran, dass das Jahr 2000 nur der Start von kosmischen Ereignissen ist, die erst knapp 60 Jahre später Auswirkungen haben werden, sind die "Hähne" davon überzeugt, dass das Ende nahe ist. Noch komplizierter wird es, als eine dritte Partei hinter dem Stück Holz her ist: das Projekt „Odessa", welches einst von den Nazis ins Leben gerufen wurde, um auf der ganzen Welt nach religiösen und machtvollen Objekten zu suchen. Marks Musik untermalt nicht nur die Szenen in Damaskus, als die Mitglieder der Gruppe sich wegen des Stück Holzes gegenseitig töten, sondern gibt der Folge auch eine religiöse Tonalität in dem Stück „The Subject". Diese Tracks stammen vom ersten Set mit MillenniuM-Musik von LLL, welches 2008 veröffentlicht wurde. Die erste Auflage war auf 2.000 Stück limitiert und war 2010 dann ausverkauft. 2015 wurde das Set wieder aufgelegt, dieses Mal limitiert auf nur noch 1.000 Stück. Auch diese Auflage ist ausverkauft. Viel Spaß beim Hören!
