INTRADA: Battlestar Galactica Collection (Stu Phillips)

Schade drum. -
Citadel Records, a division of BSX Records, presents music from the original score to SOUTH SEAS ADVENTURE, the fifth and last of the original 3-panel Cinerama travelogue films. Narrated by Orson Welles, SOUTH SEAS ADVENTURE presents five separate stories, woven out of a series of theoretical, island-hopping voyages that start en route to Hawaii and after traversing the South Seas as far as Australia, end up flying back home from Honolulu. Featured after the score for SOUTH SEAS ADVENTURE are several themes that Alex North wrote throughout his career for a wide range of projects, including music from JOURNEY INTO FEAR, A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE, THE RACERS, DRAGONSLAYER, LES MISERABLES and the legendary song from UNCHAINED, resurrected years later for the film GHOST in 1990. Alex North studied music at the Curtis Institute of Philadelphia, then won a scholarship to Juilliard in New York and the Moscow Conservatoire, making him the first-ever American to become a member of the Union of Soviet Composers. In Europe, he worked as music director for the Latvian State Theatre, before returning to the U.S. in 1935 to perfect his craft under Aaron Copland. At the same time, he produced his first compositions, including two symphonies, chamber music and dance scores for Martha Graham and Agnes de Mille. After a spell in Mexico as conductor/composer, he served as a captain with the U.S. Army, in charge of 'self-entertainment programs' for hospitalized psychiatric patients. He also did his first film work, scoring documentaries for the Office of War Information. Profoundly influenced by Duke Ellington, North began to write several innovative compositions in jazz. North went on to compose theatrical scores, including DEATH OF A SALESMAN for Elia Kazan, which opened the door to Hollywood. A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE was the first all-jazz score ever written for a motion picture. His next assignment was the film version of DEATH OF A SALESMAN, followed by VIVA ZAPATA!, for which he used traditional instruments, including marimbas and timbales. Much of his subsequent work was characterized by sparse instrumentation. One of his most beautiful and lyrical works was the love theme from SPARTACUS. His filmography includes THE RACERS, I’LL CRY TOMORROW, THE ROSE TATTOO, THE BAD SEED, THE RAINMAKER, THE LONG, HOT SUMMER, THE SOUND AND THE FURY, THE WONDERFUL COUNTRY, THE MISFITS, CLEOPATRA, SHANKS, BITE THE BULLET, WISE BLOOD, DRAGONSLAYER, UNDER THE VOLCANO, THE DEAD and THE PENITENT. Alex North was Oscar-nominated fifteen times but only received the coveted statuette as a Lifetime Achievement Award in 1986. HIstorically, SOUTH SEAS ADVENTURE was the first Stereophonic record on the market, released in February, 1958. It would later appear again on vinyl in 1981. Label X released the music on CD for the first time in 1993. Citadel Records, a division of BSX Records, presents this new release of SOUTH SEAS ADVENTURE, featuring music composed and conducted by Alex North, performed by the Cinerama Symphony Orchestra, including the Norman Luboff Choir, newly remastered by James Nelson at Digital Outland and retaining the original album liner notes by John Steven Lasher, Tony Thomas and Alain Silver. Christopher Lee leads the cast of ARABIAN ADVENTURE as Alquazar, the Caliph of Jadur, who has sold his soul to usurp the rightful ruler. He holds the populace in an iron grip, sending out thugs each night to punish those breaking curfew. One evening, two strangers are captured: Majeed (Sira), a young beggar boy with a monkey, and a handsome stranger (Tobias), who eventually break out of the dungeon. He impresses Princess Zuleira (Samms) with his fighting skills as he battles his way to the throne room. Once there, he introduces himself to Alquazar as Prince Hasan and requests Zuleira’s hand in marriage. The Calif demands a test of his bravery, a quest to find and return a magical rose from a perilous land far away... For the film’s score, composer Ken Thorne was allowed to create a lush orchestral palette of motifs featuring arrangements highlighted with bold brass, warm strings, and an ethereal choir. Principal themes include a lovely romantic melody for the princess and a thrilling percussion-driven performance for the flying carpet battle. Ken Thorne (1924-2014) was a veteran English composer for motion pictures since the mid-1960s. He gained a successful career as a big band pianist during the 1940s, and later took up studying composition at Cambridge, which led to scoring films, starting out with a 1948 musical but began earnestly in the early 1960s. Thorne so impressed director Richard Lester on one of his early films that he became Lester’s composer of choice, writing the instrumental underscore for HELP!, starring The Beatles, then winning an Oscar for best adapted music for Lester’s film A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM, and reworked the music of John Williams from SUPERMAN for Lester’s two sequels, SUPERMAN II and III. Over his career, Thorne composed, orchestrated or conducted more than 100 feature and television movies. Director Kevin Connor collaborated with composer Ken Thorne many times over the course of their careers, on films such as THE HOUSE WHERE EVIL DWELLS, THE RETURN OF SHERLOCK HOLMES, the mini-series GREAT EXPECTATIONS, SUNSET GRILL, the mini-series RETURN TO LONESOME DOVE, LETHAL EXPOSURE, AGE OF TREASON, THE ELIZABETH TAYLOR STORY, THE APOCALYPSE WATCH, MARY, MOTHER OF JESUS, IN THE BEGINNING, SANTA, JR and MARCO POLO. Dragon’s Domain Records presents ARABIAN ADVENTURE, featuring music composed by Ken Thorne. The music has been mastered by James Nelson at Digital Outland and the liner notes have been written by author David Hirsch. ARABIAN ADVENTURE is a limited edition release. CORRAL/THE HIGH AND THE MIGHTY/SEARCH FOR PARADISE, a powerful compilation of suites from four films composed by Dimitri Tiomkin (HIGH NOON, THE GUNS OF NAVARONE, GIANT, THE ALAMO), in performances conducted by the great Elmer Bernstein, performed by Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Soloists and Chorus. Released in 1955, LAND OF THE PHAROAHS was directed by Howard Hawks, written by William Faulkner, Harry Kurnitz, Harold Jack Bloom, starring Jack Hawkins, Joan Collins, Dewey Martin, Alexis Minotis, James Robertson Justice, Luisella Boni, Sydney Chaplin, James Hayter and Kerima. LAND OF THE PHAROAHS follows the Pharoah Khufu (Hawkins), who is obsessed with acquiring gold and he plans to take it all with him into the next life. He enlists the aid of Vashtar (Justice), an architect, to build him a robbery-proof tomb. In exchange, Khufu will release Vashtar’s people, who have been enslaved. Princess Nellifer (Collins) becomes Pharoah’s second wife and she begins to plot to prevent Khufu from taking his treasure with him... Released in 1957, GUNFIGHT AT THE O.K. CORRAL was directed by John Sturges (THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN, THE GREAT ESCAPE), written by Leon Uris and George Scullin, starring Burt Lancaster, Kirk Douglas, Rhonda Fleming, Jo Van Fleet, John Ireland, Lyle Bettger, Frank Faylen, Earl Holliman, Ted de Corsia, Dennis Hopper, Whit Bissell, George Matthews, John Hudson, DeForest Kelley, Martin Milner, Lee Van Cleef, Joan Camden and Kenneth Tobey. GUNFIGHT AT THE O.K. CORRAL is one of the more popular re-tellings of the classic story featuring Burt Lancaster as Wyatt Earp and Kirk Douglas as Doc Holliday in legendary star-making performances, supported by an excellent ensemble cast. Released in 1954, THE HIGH AND THE MIGHTY was directed by the great William Wellman (WINGS, BEAU GESTE, A STAR IS BORN), written by Ernest K. Gann, adapting his novel, starring John Wayne, Claire Trevor, Laaraine Day, Robert Stack, Jan Sterling, Phil Harris, Robert Newton, David Brian, Paul Kelly, Sidney Blackmer, Julie Bishop and Pedro Gonzalez Gonzalez. Considered to be the granddaddy of air disaster films, THE HIGH AND THE MIGHTY follows a commercial airliner as it develops engine problems on a trans-Pacific flight. As the pilot loses his nerve, the troubled co-pilot must take over and bring the plane back safely... As he prepares for a crash landing, the passengers are forced to reasses their lives... Released in 1957, SEARCH FOR PARADISE was a documentary film directed by Otto Lang, written by Prosper Buranelli, James S. Parker and Lowell Thomas, narrated by Thomas himself. SEARCH FOR PARADISE was one of the original three-panel Cinerama travelogue films, following Thomas as an explorer searching for paradise in the ancient cities, wild waters and lush gardens of the mountaintops around the world. Dimitri Tiomkin was a Russian Jewish composer who emigrated to America and became one of the most distinguished and best-loved music writers in Hollywood. He won a hallowed place in the pantheon of the most successful and productive composers in American film history, earning himself four Oscars and sixteen Academy Awards nominations. Classically trained in Saint Petersburg before the Bolshevik Revolution, he moved to Berlin and then to New York City after the Russian Revolution. In 1929, after the stock market crash, he moved to Hollywood, where he became best known for his scores for Western films, including DUEL IN THE SUN, RED RIVER, HIGH NOON, THE BIG SKY, 55 DAYS AT PEKING, GUNFIGHT AT THE O.K. CORRAL, RIO BRAVO, and LAST TRAIN FROM GUN HILL. From 1974 to 1979, composer Elmer Bernstein, a great believer in preserving the film music of the past, indulged an expensive whim: Re-recording excerpts from memorable scores by esteemed colleagues ranging from Alfred Newman and Miklos Rozsa to Alex North and Bernard Herrmann. This collection would span fourteen LPS and include many previously unreleased film scores, including the first recording of Herrmann’s lost score to TORN CURTAIN. Later, these historic recordings were released on compact disc by Film Score Monthly in 2006 in a limited edition box set that has continued to become scarce over the years. Citadel Records, a division of BSX Records, is proud to bring these recordings back into the marketplace, under license from the composer’s estate with the music newly remastered by James Nelson at Digital Outland and retaining the original liner notes written by Christopher Palmer. Released in 1981, AN EYE FOR AN EYE follows undercover narcotics cop Sean Kane (Norris) as he tries to find out who is responsible for the death of his partner, Dave (Kiser). The film opens with Kane and Dave waiting to meet one of their informants but ends instead with Dave being killed. Kane survives the attack but gets into trouble with his boss, Captain Stevens (Roundtree). Rather than face a disciplinary hearing and suspension, Kane quits the force. Linda (Chao), Dave’s distraught girlfriend is a reporter and starts to investigate what happened herself. But when she gets too close to the truth, Linda is also killed. Kane joins forces with James Chan (Mako), Linda’s grieving father, along with Linda’s close friend, Heather (Cooper), who is a news editor at the station Linda was working at. Linda and Heather reported to Morgan Canfield (Lee) and he offers his support to find the men responsible. Kane and Chan are attacked while they are trying to find the missing informant who ended up causing Dave’s death. When Heather discovers her apartment has been trashed to recover Linda’s interview tape, she tells Kane about the Sulu Sea, the freighter where Linda was conducting her interview. Kane sneaks onto the Sulu Sea and searches the cargo hold, finding drugs that have been imported from Hong Kong inside crates of fireworks. To cover his escape, Kane sets off the fireworks. Heather recovers Linda’s tape from a locker at the train station and leaves a message for Kane to meet her at the TV station. Playing back Linda’s tape, they discover that Canfield is the ringleader of the drug cartel and also discover the identity of the mole in the police department. Canfield takes Heather hostage and withdraws to his estate. Kane and Chan race to the estate to rescue her... AN EYE FOR AN EYE was scored by composer William Goldstein. His work on the film demonstrates a sophisticated approach that contrasts with the film’s often gritty visuals. Goldstein has been a recording artist for Motown and CBS Masterworks, scoring over 50 Movie and Television projects, including FAME & THE MIRACLE WORKER. He has been a pioneer in the use of computers and electronic instruments in music. His most distinguishing characteristic as a composer / pianist is his gift of “Instant Composition”, which he shares with audiences through master classes, recitals and albums. Goldstein early on established himself as a composer who was comfortable all over the musical map. In addition to film scoring, recording and concert scores performed from Carnegie Hall to Symphony Hall Boston, he established himself as an innovator of New Technology. In addition to his professional activities in music and film, Mr. Goldstein is a founder of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, a founding director of the California State Summer School for the Arts, and served for many years on both the music branch executive committee of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, as well as its foreign language (now International film) committee. He has also been a visiting artist for the Academy, lecturing from the Far East to the Middle East on contemporary aesthetics as well as music in film. His filmography includes music for films such as THE BINGO LONG TRAVELING ALL-STARS & MOTOR KINGS, FORCED VENGEANCE, FAME, UP THE CREEK, SAVING GRACE, HELLO AGAIN, INTIMATE POWER, SHOCKER, BLOOD RIVER, THE QUARREL, Danielle Steele’s ZOYA and THE MIRACLE WORKER, as well as contributing music on television for NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC, THE TWILIGHT ZONE, RIPLEY’S BELIEVE IT OR NOT, THE MAGICAL WORLD OF DISNEY and OCEANQUEST. Dragon’s Domain Records presents AN EYE FOR AN EYE, featuring music composed by William Goldstein for the first time on compact disc. INTRADA: Battlestar Galactica Collection (Stu Phillips)

WDR Orchester Live- Wer kennt das Stück noch?
magnum-p.i. antwortete auf magnum-p.i.s Thema in Filmmusik Diskussion

Kommt im September, "expanded and remastered 8-CD box set". -

BTW -
