IL FISCHIO AL NASO (aka ''The Seventh Floor '') is a dramatic movie directed in 1967 by Ugo Tognazzi. Cast: Ugo Tognazzi, Tina Louise, Olga Villi, Alicia Brandet, Franca Bettoja, Gigi Ballista, Gildo Tognazzi, Marco Ferreri, Riccardo Garrone, Alessandro Quasimodo, Max Turilli, Federico Boido, Cristina D'Avanzo, Cesare Gelli, Janine Reynaud, Luigi Leoni, Rossella Bergamonti, Renato Nicolai, Giulio Scarnicci, Renzo Tarabusi, George Wallis, Genny Folchi, Ermelinda De Felice, Mario De Simone, Alessandro Da Venezia, Anna Maria Aveta and Federico Valli. Industrialist Giuseppe Inzerna, afflicted by an annoying hissing sound in his nasal passageway, is employed at the very modern Salus Bank and subjected to endless examinations, analyzations and treatments. The whistle in his nose eventually goes away, but other symptoms appear in its place. Inzerna refuses to consider himself sick, yet is afraid to go home, despite the advice of the doctors who employ various excuses to place him on higher floors as his illnesses multiply, each floor representing the next stage of the developing malady. Inzerna becomes increasingly alone and defenseless against his family, who plot and scheme behind his back until the tragic ending. Teo Usuelli (13 December 1920, Reggio Emilia - 13 April 2009, Rome) was a prolific composer of about forty soundtracks between 1950 and 1976 as well as important songs in the late Fifties including "Meravigliose labbra," performed in 1959 by Johnny Dorelli. He was also an important researcher in the field of medieval and Renaissance music (transcribing popular and choral songs in a modern key) and teacher of composition at the Conservatories of Bologna, L'Aquila and Trento. In 1959, he met director Marco Ferreri, with whom he made an important artistic partnership by composing the music for famous films such as ''L'ape regina'' ''La donna scimmia,'' ''Marcia nuziale'' and ''Dillinger è morto.'' Here we present, for the first time on CD (total duration 44:21), the M° Usuelli's soundtrack for "Il fischio al naso," assembled using the mono master tapes of the recording session, archived at Universal Music Publishing Ricordi srl. At the time, the Italian RCA released only a single (PM 3401) containing "La conta," with lyrics by Tognazzi himself, performed by the beat band Le pecore nere, which can be heard in the opening credits and is reprised for the Finale. The author reprises the main theme with fabulous baroque performances for orchestra, sometimes adding beat rhythms with electric guitars and a version with polyphonic choir alternated with lounge music. Usuelli composed a poignant requiem for the love scenes between the protagonist Giuseppe and his lover Giovanna which the composer also arranges in a waltz version with a beat flavor for the party scene organized by the patients of the clinic. In one sequence, the protagonist ends up on a floor where—among the bizarre patients—is a young Spanish man who sings flamenco and plays the guitar. A rescue and preservation in honor of Maestro Teo Usuelli, one of the great names of Italian Film Music.

Ari and Listra then decide to leave together in search of a place where men do not go to war.Although the fake-prehistoric setting (the locations were in Lazio, in the areas of Tor Caldara - today Tor Caldara Regional Nature Reserve - and Tor San Lorenzo) and the title that refers to the two Pasquale Festa Campanile films set to music by Ennio Morricone and Bruno Nicolai, this Corbucci film has nothing to do with those productions.Giancarlo Chiaramello (Bra, 7th december 1939) author of several scores for Cinema and television (''Crazy Joe'', ''Orlando furioso'', ''Marco Visconti'', ''La pietra di luna'', ''Un borghese piccolo piccolo'', ''Fico d'India'', ''Mani di fata'') has composed a pleasant score based on the recurring main theme "Troglomen" performed in the Main Titles by the Turin-based progressive rock band Gli Aluminogeni which derives from the surname of the leader and singer, Patrizio Alluminio. This song was printed in stereo on the A side of the single (Fonit - SPF 31291). For the first time ever we relase all the background music score taken from the master in mono of the original session kept in the Beat Record archives and the song of the single in stereo with a total duration of almost 76 minutes (including takes not used in the film). Funny themes alternate with other rhythmic ones with distorted electric guitars with a rock - beat flavor for battle scenes, with a recurring love theme with a lounge flavor, with ethnic atmospheres. The chorus of Nora Orlandi performs in numerous tracks of this fun soundtrack that CFS and BEAT have absolutely wanted to rescure and preserve on CD.

Zwei schöne Tracks aus Usuelli´s IL FISCHIO AL NASO kann man sich auf der Universal Music Publishing-Seite komplett anhören, da sie vor knapp 20 Jahren bereits auf deren BPM Library-CDs enthalten waren:

Zum einen das barockisierende "Grand Tour" mit 1:48 Minuten, das CD-Track 12 entspricht.
Zum anderen das elegische Streicherthema "Love and Faith" mit 1:11 Minuten - eine Kurzfassung von CD-Track 5.

Den Score gibts übrigens seit ein paar Jahren schon als digitalen Download auf iTunes, damals von GDM dort reingestellt. Das Tracklisting der jetzigen CD ist genau dasselbe.

Das Album lohnt sich bedingt. So in etwa die Hälfte der Tracks ist in genau dem Stil gehalten wie ich ihn gestern verlinkt habe, durchaus auch mal mit den für Usuelli typischen polyphonen Choreinlagen. Die andere Hälfte besteht aus eher beatlastigen, modischen Mid Sixties-Tracks (einiges davon Source Music), die mir persönlich nicht zusagen. Auf der CD bzw. dem digitalen Download scheint es so gehandhabt worden zu sein, daß sich meist ein popiger Track mit einem orchestralen abwechselt. Hätte man natürlich auch ein wenig anders lösen können. Dennoch dürften zumindest für mich so rund 20 hörenswerte Minuten dabei zusammenkommen.

Mit Klaatu Records geht in den USA ein neues Label an den Start. Als erster Titel erscheint am 30. Oktober Glenn Paxtons Score für den TV-Horrorfilm Dark Night of the Scarecrow, der bisher nur als Download verfügbar war.

Klaatu Records proudly presents the score for the cult-classic horror film, DARK NIGHT OF THE SCARECROW by composer Glenn Paxton (Amazing Stories, When Legends Die, ABC’s After School Specials). The heart of the score consists of 4 keyboards: 3 synthesizer players, one piano. The rest of the orchestra – brass, percussion, and strings – reinforce, enlarge, and embroider on what the synthesizers and piano are doing or have done.

DARK NIGHT OF THE SCARECROW is a 1981 made-for-television horror film directed by veteran novelist Frank De Felitta from a script by J.D. Feigelson. When a mentally challenged man (Larry Drake) is brutally murdered by a posse of locals (Charles Durning, Lane Smith) who wrongly accuse him of harming a young girl (Tonya Crowe), a terrifying scarecrow appears and exacts violent revenge on the killers.

For this release the original elements, unfortunately, could not be located after months of searching.  Working with Post Haste sound, we were able to acquire the 48Hz/16Bit audio from the Pro Tools 2.0 film mix session used for the DVD/Blu-ray release. The packaging consists of a 4 page booklet featuring notes from composer Glenn Paxton and Writer/Producer J.D. Feigelson with artwork layout designed by Luis Miguel Rojas.

The first 50 CD’s pre-ordered will be signed by composer Glenn Paxton. Limited Edition release of 300 units.

Neue Italo-Veröffentlichungen von Quartet Records:

Quartet Records in collaboration with Cinevox Records presents a collection of renowned Italian composer Franco Bixio that showcases four premiere scores on a 2-CD set.

Directed by Italian actor Renzo Merusi, DESERTO DI FUOCO (1971) is a heist adventure film set in the Sahara Desert as outlaw El Marish (George Wang), smuggler Jean (Giuseppe Addobbati) and tagalong girlfriend Juana (Edwige Fenech) get mixed up in an illegal weapons deal.  Bixio’s music relies heavily on exotic percussion to represent the African setting and tops it off with a memorable main theme and several cues sprinkled with Edda dell’Orso’s voice. The killer main title has been included in several compilations, but this is the first official presentation of the surviving score, arranged and conducted by Roberto Pregadio.

ISTANTANEA PER UN DELITTO (1975), directed by Arthur Saxon (aka Mario Imperoli), is an erotic thriller about a down-on-his-luck gigolo whose obsession with taking S&M-inspired photographs gets him into trouble and leads to him being charged with a crime he has no recollection of committing. The unique soundtrack features a collection of songs composed by Franco Bixio (two of them in collaboration with Franco Micalizzi) and recorded by the British-Italian band Motowns for a rare LP released in 1971. For this film, the composer reused these songs and augmented them with a handful of cues—previously unreleased—written specifically for the film.

Rino Di Silvestro’s DIARIO SEGRETO DA UN CARCERE FEMMINILE (1974) (aka WOMEN IN CELL BLOCK 7) is one of the cornerstones of women-in-prison movies, featuring cult actress Anita Strindberg going undercover in a jail in order to clear her father’s name in a heroin deal gone wrong. Bixio’s catchy and bloomy score has been released on LP before, but this first CD edition is expanded to include previously unreleased bonus tracks.

Finally, Claudio Racca’s IL TUO PIACERE È IL MIO (1973), starring Ewa Aulin, Barbara Bouchet, Sylva Koscina and Lionel Stander, is a ribald sex comedy inspired on the one hand by Honoré de Balzac’s short stories and on the other hand by Pasolini’s way of retelling classic tales of folk culture with a strong erotic bend. In this, the score’s premiere release, we hear Bixio’s personal interpretation of Baroque court music with a tuneful comedic twist, plus a special song performed by the composer himself.

These four scores are presented on two discs produced and mastered by Claudio Fuiano from original master tapes courtesy of Cinevox. The richly illustrated 16-page booklet contains liner notes by Gergely Hubai discussing each film and score in detail.

Quartet Records, in collaboration with Cinevox and Mercury Editions, presents music by Mario Nascimbene (THE VIKINGS, BARABBAS, THE BAREFOOT CONTESSA)—a collection of four scores showcased on a single CD.

COMMANDOS (1968), directed by Armando Crispino and starring Lee Van Cleef and Jack Kelly, is a violent war-adventure movie set during WW2, when an Italian-American commando outfit, disguised as an Italian Army unit, parachutes behind Axis lines in North Africa. Nascimbene’s powerful music relies heavily on the traditional Dies Irae chant to underscore this suicide mission.

DONNE SENZA PARADISO (1962) (aka LA STORIA DI S. MICHELE) was an Italian-German coproduction directed by Giorgio Capitani and Rudolf Jurgent about the memoirs of Swedish doctor Axel Munthe. Munthe was a fashionable physician in Paris who built one of the best-loved houses in the world, San Michele, on the Isle of Capri, on the site of the villa of the emperor Tiberius. The composer offers a grandiose romantic score, one of his best, for the doctor’s obsession with the Mediterranean island.

Swashbuckler film LA CONGIURA DEI DIECI (1962) (aka SWORDSMAN OF SIENA), directed by Baccio Bandini and Étiene Périer, and starring Stewart Granger and Silva Koscina, is about an English mercenary escorting a girl to her arranged marriage until he realizes the true dark deals behind the arrangement. Nascimbene’s music is among his more traditional scores, written in the vein of the Miklós Rózsa MGM scores that graced so many of Granger’s adventures at the studio.

Adventure movie I LANCIERI NERI (1962) (aka THE BLACK LANCERS), directed by Giacomo Gentilomo, features Mel Ferrer as a knight forced to fight his brother after the latter joins forces with the Tartars. The composer provides an epic, colorful and romantic adventure score, which among his best efforts for the genre.

The music included on this CD from COMMANDOS and DONNE SENZA PARADISO is the only available material and was previously included in an exceedingly rare 1968 Cinevox LP. LA CONGIURA DEI DIECI and I LANCERI NERI have never been previously released in any format. The four scores offer symphonic, action and romantic music in the way only Nascimbene could write it. None of these scores is complete, but this release includes all surviving material, resulting in a comprehensive program for each.

The entire collection has been prepared and supervised by Claudio Fuiano, restored and mastered by Chris Malone. The richly illustrated 16-page booklet features extensive liner notes with Gergely Hubai discussing the composer, the films and the scores.

Haha, als ob es einen deutschen Regisseur namens Rudolf Jurgent gegeben hätte. Den Namen Rudolf Jugert sollte man schon wenigstens mal gehört haben.

Das "includes all surviving material" ist natürlich relativ, da in Orsogna die kompletten Bänder der Scores lagern dürften, wenn auch nicht klar ist in welchem Zustand sich die befinden. Außerdem gibt es von AXLEL MUNTHE (DONNE SENZA PARADISO bzw. STORIA DI SAN MICHELE) auf einer Library-LP zumindest noch einige Minuten mehr, die nicht auf der alten Cinevox-LP COMMANDOS/STORIA DI SAN MICHELE mit oben waren.

Das Material zu LANCIERI NERI und SWORDSMAN OF SIENA stammt natürlich ursprünglich aus Nascimbenes Privatarchiv. Ich habe CDR-Kopien genau dessen, was da jetzt von diesen beiden Musiken auf der Quartet-CD oben ist, bereits mehr als 15 Jahre in der Sammlung (auch in derselben Sequenzierung). Claudio Fuiano hat davon selbstverständlich auch nur eine Kopie (vemutlich auf DAT) in den 90ern von Nascimbene selbst erhalten gehabt. Und daher kommt das - bis auf die beiden Cinevox-Titel natürlich - alles. Ist sogar beides in Stereo und Nascimbene hat die Tracks bereits irgendwann in den 80ern für von ihm geplante LP-Alben aus seinen kompletten Originalbändern zusammengestellt.
LANCIERI NERI klingt bei meiner Kopie ausgesprochen gut, die 17 Minuten von SWORDSMAN weisen dagegen deutlich mehr Mängel auf. Aber anscheinend konnte Chris Malone bei letzterem zumindest teilweise doch klanglich noch ein bißchen was rausholen. Er hat auch bei Quartets Editon von ROCCO E SUOI FRATELLI vor ein paar Wochen ja wirklich tolle Arbeit geleistet, so daß die alte CAM-CD davon im Prinzip entsorgt werden kann. So gut hatte ROCCO zuvor nämlich noch nie geklungen.

Dasselbe Programm mit den vier Nascimbene-Scores war übrigens vor 10 Jahren schon bei Saimel geplant gewesen, ließ sich aber damals leider nicht verwirklichen..

Score endlich raus bei Spotify... Zur Superserie (selten mich so an Gewalt und Action erfreut hahahaha fürs TV auch mit das Blutrünstigste, das ich je gesehen hab... aber auch Action von der so mancher Hollywoodfilm nur träumen kann... naja nichts anderes erwartet vom Team von THE RAID). Musik ist atmosphärisch dicht... gefällt mir gut... mal Komponisten aus Indonesien... das ma selten... haha... 1.55h lang is natürlich wieder overkill... standout cue ist OPERATION BEGINS... das passt auch mega auf die Szene, ein einziger Take von einer Truppe Söldnern los über eine Wiese über eine Klippe hoch in die Luft während sich unten ein Katz und Maus Spiel entwickelt...

Freu mich auf Season 2... die Serie war der grösste Hit für den TV Sender am Anfang des Jahres in England... ernst nehmen kann man die Serie natürlich nicht, aber hui war das spannend und over the top halt... nichts für schwache Nerven

Über den Nascimbene-Sampler freue ich mich natürlich sehr. Der schließt doch eine paar kleinere Lücken, selbst wenn irgendwo noch der ein oder andere Track fehlen sollte. Auch den Bixio-Sampler werde ich mir zulegen. Das Thema von DESERTO DI FUOCO mag ich sehr, und es war ja schon auf diversen Zusammenstellungen vertreten (seltsamerweise oft im Italo-Western-Kontext, dabei ist das gar kein Western). Aber vor allem DIARIO SEGRETO ist ein sehr schöner, melodischer Score. Ganz anders, als es der dazugehörige Film vermuten ließe.

Das ist mir auch sehr positiv aufgefallen. Eine deutliche Verbesserung gegenüber der bisherigen Ausgabe, die in der Tat klangtechnisch problematisch war. An dieser Stelle mal eine große Empfehlung für den ROCCO-Score an alle, die ihn noch nicht kennen. Es ist eine von Rotas schönsten und dramatischsten Filmmusiken.

Hab mir den Score mal angehört. Sicherlich einige nette Passagen dabei, aber irgendwie klingt das für mich wie typisch britische Thriller/Crime Musik. Düster brodelnd depressiv. Könnte auch von Lorne Balfe sein. Sicherlich atmosphärisch, aber so ein Scorestil nervt nur noch. Da vergeht mir die Lust aufs Schauen. Hatte mit der Serie Marcella angefangen, aber Balfes depri Score hat mir die Lust genommen. Alleine schon wegen dieses Scorestils hätte ich keine Lust auf Gangs Of London. Die neue Cobra 11 Staffel hatte leider auch so einen Scorestil, nur noch schlimmer.

All Score Media veröffentlichen am 27. November eine überarbeitete Neuauflage von Peter Thomas' The Big Boss auf CD und LP.

Bruce Lee: The Big Boss (revised)

The Big Boss war Bruce Lees erster großer Film und verschaffte ihm den internationalen Durchbruch. Premiere feierte Regisseur Lo Weis Film 1971 in Hongkong, seinen internationalen Siegeszug trat er aber erst 1973 an.

Der deutsche Verleih glaubte, die originäre chinesische Filmmusik wäre zu weit von den hiesigen Hörgewohnheiten entfernt und beauftragte Peter Thomas, einen eigenen Soundtrack zu komponieren. Dies gelang ihm mit Bravour. Das Resultat war, dass dieser von nun an in der ganzen Welt, mit Ausnahme von China, eingesetzt und somit zur „eigentlichen“ Filmmusik von The Big Boss wurde.

Seit der Erstveröffentlichung dieser außergewöhnlichen Filmmusik im Jahr 2010 hatte sich einiges getan, was eine verbesserte Neuauflage überfällig machte: In Peter Thomas‘ Archiv konnten vier Stücke sowie eine etwas längere Version aus dem Film, die bisher als verschollen galten, gefunden werden. Diese ersetzen nun die Bonustracks der alten CD, die zwar einstmals für den Film komponiert, aber nicht in ihm verwendet wurden.

Leider verstarb Peter Thomas während der Vorbereitungen zu dieser von ihm bis zuletzt mit Eifer unterstützten Produktion am 17. Mai 2020, 94-jährig in Lugano (CH). Ihm ist dieses Album gewidmet. Ebenso Bruce Lee, der am 27. November 2020 achtzig Jahre alt geworden wäre.

Noch mehr Hau-Drauf-Action aus den späten 80'ern/frühen 90'ern. Hired To Kill. Jerry Grant? Sagt mir nichts. Nico Mastorakis? Auch mir nicht sonderlich bekannt. Aber der Film ist mit Brian Thompson, dem Alien-Bounty-Hunter aus den X-Files, nebst Oliver Reed, George Kennedy und José Ferrer. Das "composed and conducted" macht mich wirklich neugierig.

Das digitale Album von Moviescore Media, das dann vor einem Jahr rauskam (siehe meinen anderen Beitrag weiter oben, 19.7.2019), habe ich schon zweimal oder dreimal gehört. Ist eine solide Musik eines mir völlig unbekannten Komponisten, die ich mir auch auf einem der typischen Edel-/Silva-Alben seinerzeit hätte vorstellen können. Aber einen Drang jetzt noch die CD zu kaufen verspüre ich nicht mehr. Für Freunde von Lack und Leder Papier und Plastik trotzdem schön.

Na ja, bei Apple ist er auch schon gelistet. ? Ist ebenfalls nichts für Fans von lossless-Veröffentlichungen, wie mich. Ich glaube aber, dass das Album auch über die Händler mit besserer Qualität erhältlich sein wird. Genau weiß man das aber erst im November. Auf der UCM-Seite steht noch zum Soundtrack:

Der Soundtrack wird von UCM.ONE auf dem Label M-Square in Zusammenarbeit mit Schacht Musikverlag erstmalig weltweit veröffentlicht. Ein großer Dank geht zudem an Walter Potganski, der als Quellmaterial die alten Original Bänder wieder orten konnte und so erst eine Rekonstruieren der benutzen Musiktitel möglich machte. Bis kurz vor seinem Tod am 17. Mai 2020 hat der legendäre Filmkomponist Peter Thomas noch die Rekonstruktion begleitet.
